Scrotor: Oh, Blind Guardian. Their brand of power metal

Oh, Blind Guardian. Their brand of power metal is like an incredibly complex cheese. If all you've eaten is sharp cheddar, you probably won't like it: the dozens of layered vocal tracks on top of the dual guitar attack on top of drums mixed with an electronic drum machine on top of bass on top of two 90-person choirs on top of three international symphonies is akin to eating all the French cheese varieties whose names you can't pronounce and having them paired with fine wine. However, if you're like me, and have listened to so much music that you demand complexity or uniqueness in your music, it is a delicacy that cannot be passed up. Thus is the newest Blind Guardian offering. Naturally, it's concept album, and, in fact, a sequel to their highly regarded 1995 album Imaginations from the Other Side. I honestly don't know what the fuck the story is, and I've even gone to listening to each album back to back to try and immerse myself in it more thoroughly! Something about the realm of gods... and another realm via a red mirror... and a holy war... In any case, the story is secondary to the music, which is just impossibly dense and mostly incredibly catchy and brilliant. No one does epic like Blind Guardian. Unfortunately, because there is SO MUCH going on, the mix is peculiar in a few ways (vocals, choirs and orchestras are pretty high in the mix, leaving other aspects a bit muddy). It is an album that can only be enjoyed via headphones, the higher fidelity the better. Otherwise the intricacies just get lost. 4.0/5 - Great album. All in all, this album took me a while to get into, but after a few listens, I think it's a winner. It's overlong, a bit overblow, and probably too dense with a mix that doesn't help (but may have been necessary, given the complexities). Probably their best since A Nightfall in Middle-Earth, and on par with Imaginations from the Other Side.

Holy shit. This is some great power metal. The lead singer sounds EXACTLY like the guy from Blind Guardian, but the music is heavier and less orchestral, and the lyrical content is not exclusively about sci-fi and fantasy stories (better or worse, depending on your pleasure) - it's kind of like a combo with Iced Earth, in terms of the heaviness of the riffs. I'm a little surprised I haven't heard of this stuff before, this band is pretty awesome. 4.0/5 - Great power metal. The cheese factor is minimal, these guys just deliver some solid tunes with soaring vocals.

Following in tradition, here are a few of my thoughts around watching Babylon 5. Spoilers to follow. Though, honestly, I know nobody is watching. The show starts off in a strange place. The known, unaligned worlds of the galaxy have survived a long bloody war, and as a result, collectively decided that building a massive space station was the best way to build diplomatic relations. Actually, they built five stations, and as of the start of the show, the previous four have been destroyed or disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Babylon 5 is the fifth attempt, and the pseudo-militaristic beauracrats that run the place are the galaxy's "last, best hope for peace." A quarter of a million beings live in B5, and is, oddly, largely staffed by humans, who among the known races are probably the least sophisticated, least advanced, and most war-like. The ambassadors from the larger, older worlds resent the humans, but tolerate them so far as they don't get in their way. The galaxy is filled with the relics and mysteries of the "Old Ones," races that date back to the birth of the galaxy itself. And from the outset, telepaths have a mysterious, critical function in the workings of the universe. It's a weird place to start. For instance: how would the unaligned worlds have ever gotten to the point where they could agree to build a space station, no less five of them? And if they can build five of them, why aren't there more stations like it? And why build it in orbit around a strange, mysterious planet on which no one is allowed to set foot? Anyhow. There are at least a few interesting questions to answer. Add a few compelling characters, decent acting, intriguing world building, and solid plot narratives, and you could go far. This, sadly, did not happen. The acting is mostly terrible, the dialog is cheesy and stilted, and the only interesting plot narratives dry up completely 3.5 seasons in (out of 5). It

Aaaaaaaaaaand finished Voyager. Fuck you Rick Berman. Double fuck you Brannon Braga. I seriously can't believe how much they wasted the potential for what could have been a great show... if they had taken ONE RISK during the entire seven year run. All action, no consequences. That being said, I still gave it a 4/5 on Netflix. Why? It is possibly the highest quality sc-fi show ever produced. Every episode went down like candy. So, while I was entertained, I was just so terribly disappointed because I wanted it to be on par with DS9 (and it could have been!). Perhaps, though, this show is really the most Star Trek of all the Star Trek series (episodic, idealistic). One last note: I think Kate Mulgrew is underrated. She made terrible dialogue almost believable for seven seasons. Not quite a Patrick Stewart, of course, but definitely 2nd behind him. Note, however, that in terms of captains, it goes: JLP>Sisco>Janeway>>Kirk>Archer. In terms of dialogue quality (from the writers), however, it goes: Sisco>Janeway>JLP>Kirk>Archer. Now to mop up the rest of TOS... then the Animated Series, and I'm done! Let the cheese begin...

B5, "Infection," S01E04 Babylon 5 is... a really strange show so far. My best description I can give for it so far is "A Scifi's scifi." It is so far doing its damnedest to throw in every costumed alien, laser blast, and computer graphic space dogfight possible. ...Which doesn't really forgive some of its cheese. I can see what they're doing, and I like it. They're taking most of the "soft" elements of Star Trek and filling them with other, more reasonable premises. So far, they're surviving without shields or transporters or replicators, but they're still using technobabble, pseudoscience, and one-liners as a crutch. I'm willing to forgive, however. I'm only four episodes in, and between the cheese there are pretty interesting dialogues, character developments, and plot twists. People are *actually* devious, rather than just having the camera cutting away to them making devious faces. And when commanding officers make magnificently bad leadership decisions, their reporting officers actually report on it. This episode was bizarre, as it managed to mix in: eugenics, criticisms against academia, the necessity for space travel for the human race to survive the death of the sun, and religious fanaticism. It certainly wasn't one of the best episodes of television I've seen. But for the amount of shit they crammed into there, I was impressed.

CapitolZebra: That sounds positively miserable to me. haha.

That sounds positively miserable to me. haha. And not to mention dangerous for my wallet. I hate shopping for just about everything, but especially clothes and food. Granted, in the case of Costco it could also have to do with the fact that the Costco we go to (a block away from our apartment) is one of the busiest Costco's in North America. Literally. There are lines wrapping around the store if you make the mistake of going after 3pm on a weekday or anytime on a weekend. For us the factor determining how quickly we make the dash for the exit is how long it takes us to do the math and compare a price to same item at Safeway, if it happens to be something we don't get often. Though, I will admit, when we are actually looking for something out of the ordinary - like the bottle of wine or brick of feta cheese - Costco is almost always the place to have it for the best price. I just wish our Costco down here would carry liquor. It's illegal in VA for stores to do that, and it just so annoying.
