I'm kind of in the same boat. More phone time. Also, I autodrafted and ended up with some really excellent players by random! But really, if you think there's skill in fantasy football, you are wrong. Unless you're in a league where there are TOO many choices (talking 8 or 10 person league, otherwise you just play whoever the fuck isn't injured). Although, I do pay attention to more games now! I knew nothing about defenses before FF.

Spartan: I started my very first fantasy football league

I started my very first fantasy football league this year, at the invitation of my cooperating teacher. She invited me before the school year started saying that it was something that the staff did. Being my first one, I drafted a three home team players and a bunch of others I had no knowledge of. As it turns out, all of the people who knew what they were doing and drafted the right players (many of whom have injured themselves), are not faring well. Whereas I, who had next to no idea what I was doing, now have the best record and beat my last opponent by 83 points. Does anyone else play fantasy football? I'm a huge football fan, and the sport (to me) doesn't need any extra to be compelling. However, I'm also not the guy who knows anybody's stats or even many players beyond team's quarterbacks. And while I thought that this would make me care more about these other players and what they're doing week to week, it just makes me look at my phone a little more on Thursday and Monday nights, and on Sunday.

My yearly shout out for biking to work. Looks like Anchorage is pretty dry so hopefully there won't be too much of an impediment to to cycling for the riders up there. Get to it guys. Make some teams, get the word out. This year I'm going for a 1000 mile month, which is going to be pretty tough with only 19 work days for me to do it in. Not sure what adventures this year holds for me as compared to last year, but I think I'm ready to get started.

That's a not great way of doing leave time. We have everyone submit leave time at the same time for the upcoming year. And then decisions are made based off a number of factors, including seniority. However we make sure the same person doesn't have all the "good" days off (around holidays, spring break, etc) every year or even twice in a year. We have two support staff, the most senior person doesn't get the week around Thanksgiving and around Christmas off every year, we make her alternate. Otherwise it really sucks and you can have someone whose been there a decade but is still the low man in seniority and has never had Christmas off. So boo bad management practice. But yay for an epic bike trip!

kaiden: At work we have this vacation book that gets

At work we have this vacation book that gets passed around. It is passed around in order of seniority. Being that I'm one of few employees that haven't been here for at least fifteen years, I'm pretty much the last in line for deciding any vacations for the upcoming year. Just in case I needed to be reminded of my place. Youngin'. Pawing through the year, red marks on everything already, I noticed that for my section there were no dates taken around the celebration or observation of Harry Potter's birthday. Plus, as sort of a nice thank-you for our tireless services, we get an extra day off during the week of our birthday. So I signed up for that week. So I have a week off. During which I have no plans. Which is exciting. For that week I usually stay in town for the Potter parades, but for this auspicious year I was thinking of doing something else with my time off. Folks were talking about epic camping and/or fishing trips. I was reminded of this race. Or rather, reminded that I wanted at some point to do a lengthy bike trip. Well, to try, at least. There's the whole getting in shape thing. And I'm not even sure I have the right gear. Or the right bike. Or really where I would want to go. But there have been enough summer days peeking over my cubicle walls to the sun shining weakly through tinted windows to make me want to try. Thought I'd put that out there. I understand that generally, nobody has that kind of time. Or interest. Or energy. And even if they do, it's just a big production. Anyhow. That's my plan. Now to figure out how to implement it.

Spain vs Netherlands 6/13 11am AKDT Final: 5-1 Netherlands After the final whistle, one of the commentators: "Even as an underspoken Englishman: 'Wow.'" In the first half, it seemed an even game. Spain even went up first on a penalty kick. Van Persie scored the first of his goals just before halftime with a great run up and a header right over the goalie. Beautiful play. Going into the half, 1-1, I don't think anyone, even the Dutch, were expecting what happened in the second half. Shortly after the second half began, Robben got the first of his goals, on a beautiful passing play to put the Dutch on top 2-1. 10 minutes later, the Dutch scored again on a scrum in the goalie box. One of the offenders blooped in a goal in the middle of it. After the goal, you could see the Spanish give up and not put as much effort into the game. Which led to the Dutch running away with it. Two more goals would be scored, one each by Van Persie and Robben, to yield a blowout game. You could tell that after the 3rd goal, Spain kept participating in the game, but stopped trying for it. The Spanish had some high expectations, but perhaps Netherlands was waiting for their revenge after the 2010 World Cup final. What a blowout.

Mexico vs Cameroon 6/13 8am AKDT I caught the game ~20 minutes in. Apparently Mexico had a goal called back in that time. I haven't looked into that incident, can't comment. I did see the second called-back goal by Mexico. On Mexico's corner, the sideline referee didn't quite pay attention, or doesn't quite understand offsides, but made a horrible call. Should've been a goal. The game went into 0-0 at halftime. In the second half, Mexico strung together a beautiful play, threading some defenders and taking a great shot. CMR's goalie had a beautiful, great save, but was only able to parry the ball. A trailing Mexican offender was able to finish the rebound off the keeper to score the goal. Mexico was definitely the better team, but perhaps didn't take Cameroon's offense as seriously as they should have. Cameroon had some great chances.

kitacek: Brazil opens the World Cup in strange fashion.

Brazil opens the World Cup in strange fashion. In a 3-1 win over Croatia, Brazil scored all the goals in the match. Truly, Croatia looked like the stronger team throughout the first half, and definitely in the last 15-20 minutes of the game. If they had scored all of their chances in the end, Croatia would've won. A strong attack by Croatia 11 minutes in yielded some sloppy defending by Brazil, scoring on themselves. Later in the first half, Brazil evened the game with a perfect-placement goal. Truly, it seems like the Croatian goalie wasn't paying attention and didn't cover in time. In the second half, Croatia certainly wasn't helped by the referee. A Brazilian forward threw a dive while handling the ball in CRO's penalty area, fooling the referee into giving a PK. Go-ahead goal despite the keeper getting to the shot. Any other professional keeper in the world, with two hands on a ball like that, would've stopped it. Croatia had lots of strong attacks as the game wound to a close, and another strange call by the referee stopped up an attack that had Brazil's goalie out of position, fallen on the ground. What would've been a goal by Croatia to even it had a mystery foul called by the referee to stop up the play. As Croatia was running out of steam, they gave up on a Brazilian counterattack. Again, the goalie seemed not quite professional as he blew the timing on his leap to stop the ball. It was really a shot that you'd expect any professional goalkeeper to stop. Croatia blew their chances. They'll need to stop up their mistakes to make it out of group stage this year. Even if they'd tied the game, you could still make a Caddyshack-inspired Cinderella Story joke out of it.

To start going longer just move out to the valley and you'll have it made. The only reason I can lay down so many miles is because I live out in the 'burbs. I actually noticed a lot of AK teams this year, one team captain in Juneau who I think worked at the brewery posted to the facebook page a lot. There were even some Anchorage teams on there.

> Saw a car drive the wrong way up a highway offramp Forgive me for laughing at that one. I'm going to pretend it was some road raging idiot, or some idiot not paying attention, rather than a lost-in-translation type scenario. You've seen some shit, man. Kudos for breaking the bystander effect and helping the injured guy. I think people in general use the bubble of their cars as shields to deflect civic responsibility. Though some may have already seen the lady calling for aid, I imagine all of those commuters appreciated your efforts to keep traffic flowing as efficiently as possible. I would love to see time lapse go-pro footage of your average commute.

Another year down for me. Since this is the last day... work day, of May I thought I might go ahead and list my bike commuting numbers for the month and some of the things I've seen. By the time I get back to my car today I will have ridden about 868 miles over 21 work days. All but three days I rode just shy of 42 miles round trip, two days were 45 r/t, and 1 day was 27. This beats my last years record of 823 miles which I thought was already about the best I could possibly do. It's also my very first year that I rode every single day, it helped that it was a good month for weather. I'll probably end up ranked in the top 50 riders in terms of miles out of like 14000 total, and in total I spent about 60 hours in the saddle. I'm tired, really, really tired. That feeling has seeped into every single thought and aspect of my being. On the weekends I've tried to make plans, but kids allowing I often just find myself laying down and not moving. I'm so tired I have kinda started to understand what crippling depression feels like. But I also feel stronger in general than I have for a long time and the days where the tiredness isn't as bad I actually feel good and quite peppy, so next month when I cut back on distance I think I'm going to start feeling really good most of the time. Now some of the shit I've seen. First of all I can count about 4 times that I have actually seen shit, real human shit just off the side of the sidewalk. Since a lot of my ride goes through areas where homeless people camp this isn't all that surprising really. I saw a guy on a unicycle several miles away from anywhere in particular, along one of the busiest and shittiest roads I commute along which has no shoulder, no sidewalk, and the speed limit is 45mph and most of the vehicles are large freight trucks. Hella ballsy as shit. I saw cyclist get a speeding ticket, he then complained to me before racing on past me,

Cue razzing from a couple of college sports junkies who thought they had 1st & 2nd place in the bag, and their incredulity at anyone picking a 7-seed and a 2-seed in the Final Four.

I know your closing sentence remarks that you are pondering your next big adventure... but do you have any ideas of the next mountain you are eyeing? Denali? Abroad, even? What better excuse to take the family to Europe than to also tackle some peaks in the Alps. I imagine over there, as you come down off the mountain there would be quite the civilized reception at the Swiss chalets (in stark contrast to the rough burger joint in Talkeetna).

What's the sign-up cost? And this is just a 5k? If so, I'm interested now that I got the "okay" from the doc. EDIT: Might be making a trip with my dad that weekend. But give me the info anyways ;)

MrFood: As a follow up, this was an interesting trip

As a follow up, this was an interesting trip with a lot of firsts for me. Besides just leading a group of two new climbers who I've been working with for a couple of months, a fourth member of the party had never been on a big mountain before, had never climbed, and I had never met in person was also coming with. The guys all did very well and we actually made good time on each leg of the trip. We did in fact summit, which I will admit I was surprised by. I had my doubts about altitude sickness and once we were up there weather also became a factor. On our move up to the high camp a lot of people were coming down saying the wind was too much. Some professionally guided parties were leaving the high camp saying that they were expecting 70mph winds that night. We decided to continue and set up know we might have to leave if things got really shitty. The wind was pretty bad all night, to the point that I had convinced myself that we would have to head straight home the next morning. But as luck would have it the wind died down about 1am and I made the call to at least give it a shot. It was eerie to be the only team on the mountain. I saw no other parties anywhere on out side of the mountain, we were totally self reliant as there was no one we could turn to for help in an accident. The entire clime was very cold and windy but was actually in great condition with the climbing much more direct than two years ago. Overall I'd say we had a good time and that isn't to say that we didn't get frustrated at times with each other. Sometimes pretty angry, but climbing is a hard activity which leaves you cold, tired, hungry and physically and emotionally drained at the end of a trip. I'm glad for a break for a bit, from climbing, riding, camping... not being at home on weekends for a couple months now. But I am wondering what my next big adventure will be, and when I'll be ready for it.

Yeah it is a lot different when you are supposed to be the lead for this kind of outing, and hard with you have to give orders that may not make a lot of sense to the other people in the group. Being in charge of a group is hard work, but easier when its something you love to do anyway.

Sept. 16th is the Tunnel to Towers 5K run in Anchorage to commemorate all the fire fighters, police, and service men and women who lost the lives or were severely injured during 9/11 and the years following. The charity builds custom houses for wounded service members who can no longer live in traditional housing. I'll be running on the Alpine Emergency Services team. Anyone interested?
