(sigh) Yeah. Something about the server upgrade back in mid-July torched that particular piece. Either some default date formats drifted, or it just failed too many times and the Cel.ly thing gave up on it. Glad to hear it's back up now.

In one of our modeling programs, we found some sort of overflow bug that probably hasn't been reported before. We sent trouble tickets in to Autodesk and they said that was brand new for them. For whatever reason, because our file size was so large, when booting the program it would hang up. It filled the ~80gb open on my hard drive in about 10 minutes. Fun times.

So, I implemented this around December 15th of last year. This meant that as part of the idkfa database, I was storing the images that would be captured using this proxy mechanism. This meant that the idkfa database would grow along with the number and size of the images used. Cut to a few months later. First, I run out of files on my backup server (you would think 45 million would be enough). I fix this, only to find that it was masking another problem: I was running out of space almost every week. I know I wasn't adding *that* much more information to the applications I was backing up, but *something* was killing my storage over time. Turns out, it was this. Storing 89MB of information each day (GIFs aren't the most efficient format), this slowly ate through my 60GB backup partition. I've now changed my backup routine to only store a week's worth of idkfa backups. Still, though. Small changes, vast consequences.

So, taking down another long-standing complaint. Two things were happening: Images would get taken down from imgur on occasion, and forever be broken images. When trying to view a large thread (like the pinned thread), image loading would repeatedly reflow the page, causing the comment box to jump repeatedly. This made viewing the entire thread difficult unless either you waited for all of the images to load, or you viewed the thread's contents one-by-one. I've now got a sort of image proxy going on idkfa. It will rewrite the img tag in your post, and rewrite it so that it goes through a slapped together proxying service. The image's width and height with be recorded, and will be used to hard-code the width and height of images prior to loading, stopping the browser from reflowing each time a new image would load.

idkfa's hosts are being weirdly draconian about what they consider "spammy" posts. My post about RAID arrays was apparently too much for it. It was irritating enough that I did something about it. I've implemented a sort of weird workaround. It more or less just encodes/decodes data before it passes things along, and the process *should* be invisible. Except for the back button. The back button kinda doesn't work. And you'll see a flicker of the data as it is encoded. But otherwise, business as usual while I figure out how to fix this more permanently.

Depending on the content of your message, certain words or combinations of words may put you over the threshold of what my hosts consider suspicious content. If so, you will recieve a "403 Forbidden" message, with no indication as to why.Unfortunately, there isn't much I can do about this at the moment. I will try to research and see if there's a way I can be exempt from this. For the time being: try to sound less like spam. Thanks.

kaiden: SPDCA: Status As I think I mentioned,

SPDCA: Status As I think I mentioned, I'm not super happy with the direction Google is taking their chat/IM/Hangouts thing. Nor do I really care for the timelines from Facebook, or the arbitrary limitations of Twitter. But really, it's Gchat/Hangouts that's bugging me the most. It's nice that they have video, voice, and SMS chat. And "offline delivery." And integrate seamlessly into the rest of the Google ecosystem. But they fucking with something I didn't realize I missed until it was gone: Status Indicators. ... Why? I don't really know. Maybe it's because I spent my formative years logged in to an IM service. Maybe I don't care to see a feed, or a stream, or a timeline. Maybe I just want a list of the latest updates from people. At a glance. Maybe I'm just angry that even the old Gmail chat client only stored the history of your last three (or five?) custom statuses. Anyhow. idkfa now has a sort of status mechanism (also accessible via the "Statuses" link in the top navigation). Use this however you see fit. If you want to post random movie quotes or song lyrics, great. If you want to post which album you're listening to currently, also great. If you want to tell us where in the world you happen to be because otherwise we would have no idea, that would also be swell (you know who you are). I've set up the item called "State Machine." Status posts are not included in the "latest post" window, but will appear in searches and also appear "unread" if you haven't read them yet. If you want to exclude the "State Machine" item, you can remove it from the results with "-item:17"

SCROLL TO IT JOSH. Well, that's sort of a fun thing: I am. At least, I do the best job that I can, given the random content I'm displaying. There are two display mechanisms on idkfa: "Classic" mode, the "1995-style bullshit" that displays one post at a time according to user selection, as well as that post's relative position in the thread. "Full" mode, where all replies in a thread are rendered in full. For classic mode, browser scrolling isn't an issue: you're only every displaying 1 thing, and that thing is at the top. For full mode, this becomes a problem, as the contents of a post can change the geometry of the thread after a page has loaded. For instance: a thread full of dozens of hilarious, hand-picked GIFs that load slowly even over a broadband connection. Even though I can tell the browser "Go to this inline bookmark called thread_NNNN," the browser can only do so accurately at the time that I ask it (meaning, I can tell it to focus anywhere on the page, but that point can change according to user action, dynamic changes to page elements, or late-loading page elements changing the geometry of the page). So, I do scroll for you, but it only works well when there are relatively few page geometry changes after the initial page load. If you look at the thread display page's HTML source, you'll see the following code (with actual commentary):
    // Little hackish... but so is everything else.
    Event.observe(
        document,
        'dom:loaded',
        function() {
            if( window.location.href.indexOf( '#thd_' ) == -1 ) {
                window.location = window.location + '#thd_5043';
            }
        }
    ); This script binds an event handler that triggers when the programmatic underpinnings of the rendered page are available for manipulation (the

I keep coming back to this thread. I generated these numbers/graphs because I found an interesting way to generate them. Now, unfortunately, my brain is drawing uncomfortable conclusions that are hard to ignore. First: I apparently have a fairly consistent productivity/burn out cycle. I work feverishly on a project, and then tend to not return for months, if at all. The new idkfa rendering system, the game projects, and the novel writing tool projects, all seem to follow about the same cycle, and towards the end I burn myself out, and afterwards either do nothing, or find another project to focus on. I understand why certain projects are exciting to me. I don't understand why I pursue them when they are interesting/relevant to so few people (and usually, only to me). I'm excited about them as I'm working on them. But it's rare, if ever, that I'm happy about the time I spent doing them afterwards, much like how a painter is never happy with their work, and never feels they are finished. My sense of satisfaction, while greater than zero, rarely matches the time investment. It's hard to justify a hobby that takes 4-5 hours a day (or more), particularly as the graphs show that they take weeks or months before I eventually burn out. I maintain a functional routine: I pay my bills, clean my house, mow my yard... but more often than not, I'm merely meeting the bare minimum of what's required, and never feel like I'm getting ahead of things. The goals and routines I try to adhere to (exercise routines, reading, family and social commitments, etc.) limp along while I apologize for them and go on nattering about seen/unseen posts on idkfa. Recently, I thought back on my telecommunications simulation game, which got me thinking about interesting possibilities for the game again. What if part of your "mini-game" was pointing cell phone towers in real-time to capture the most customers at any one time? What if you

Probably only interesting for the programmer/statistician types out there, but I got it in my head I needed graphs for this, and here they are. Lines of Code, One line per project, linear scale: Lines of Code, One line per project, logarithmic scale (so v3 doesn't take up quite as much space): My thought was to visualize the rate at which I code on my personal projects. I figured out how to pull this sort of data from my archives, but alas, I can only count changes for the time during which I was collecting my archive versions. June 15th, 2011 is my earliest date, through the present, and some of the smaller, simpler projects that haven't changed much reflect this. One should also note that "lines of code" is a notoriously poor metric for the size or complexity of a project. In some cases (v3 being one), I have tons of legacy code that I simply leave in place because I'm loathe to find out what subtle things might break if I remove them. There are also testing scripts, mock-ups, prototypes, etc., that find themselves in the codebase which I keep around in case I need them again. Much of these are simply "copy-pasted," with slight modifications made. That said, as it is, I have almost 30,000 lines of code I'm developing against or maintaining over the last few years. v3, going from ~7000 to ~12000 lines of code has probably seen the most work, while some of my other projects (some I've exposed, some I have not) come in close second. My adventure game framework attempts share maybe 50% of the same codebase, but vary wildly after that. My collaborative, distributed wiki/novel-writing system consists of almost entirely new code, using only a few utility methods from some of my other projects. Finally, there are other projects outside the codebases listed here, the exercise bike/video integration project, an AlaskaUSA statement export parsing program, a secure password

I was informed of a "delay" when it comes to editing posts. I believe I now have this fixed. Let me know if it is not the case. EDIT: 63ms of lag... unacceptable.
