If you have a blown clutch your car will continue to run. If your clutch is still good it'll pop and kill the engine like a good little manual should. Simple.

Not that I am basing this on in depth research or anything, but I think even 50-60K sounds pretty low for this sort of thing. My old Subbie went a loooong time without having the clutch replaced; way more than 50-60K. And my Honda is the same.

or like teaching someone how to drive manual. my stepdad apparently had to replace his clutch on his old old subbie after he spent a few hours trying to teach me how to drive it. (his method of teaching really was not resonating even the slightest.)

I always like the CarTalk method of testing your clutch. Park against a tree and see if your car dies when you let out the clutch. A nice big stout tree.

driving hard and/or amateur usage of a manual transmission. Like my F1 style driving. Like my dad trying to pull the boat out of the river when he didn't know how to use a manual transmission with an increased load. I ARE SO SMOOOOOOOOF

kitacek: it had a very difficult time shifting. Nissan

it had a very difficult time shifting. Nissan said the mechanic thought it was a miracle I was able to drive it into the shop. when a clutch blows all the way, you can move the pedal anywhere you want, and the shifter anywhere you want, but it the engine won't engage the transmission. it'd be as if you were giving the engine gas with the shifter in the neutral position. one way to gauge how much the clutch has worn is at what point in the motion of the clutch pedal the engine/transmission engages. new vehicles should engage the engine/transmission near the bottom of the pedal motion, and a blown clutch engages immediately the moment you press it, if at all.
