I was browsing adn.com today and I saw this article as well. Telecom companies are the worst. I'm really glad that there's a technical reason why their claim of a few customers hogging all the bandwidth is a lot of bs. Thanks for clarifying Josh. I'll challenge you Josh, the reason GCI is doing this is not because they misunderstand what you posted. A bunch of suits at GCI decided that the easiest way to increase their profits was to figure out a way to profit off of as many of their customers as they possibly can with overage charges. I love private business and everything, but this is what happens when you have an effective monopoly. A company can do or charge whatever they want. Simple as that. As bad as it is, at least the internet works up there though...same cannot be said for my Charter Cable internet about 20% of the time...

Ah, good comments. Well, I have an Android phone (a Motorolla Cliq to be precise), and to get this functionality I had to "root" my phone (the equivalent of "jailbreaking" in the IPhone realm). If you're worried about the legalities of this, I believe a superior court or someone recently ruled that this kind of "rooting" or "jailbreaking" is 100% legal. If I could know about what particular type of phone Dan has I could probably be of more help, I'm pretty sure it would work for a Blackberry/IPhone as well, though I don't have these types of phones and I'm sure the way to add wireless tethering functionality is a lot different. Please let me know specifically the type of things you're curious about, but basically your smartphone asks as a wireless hub that transmits your 3G signal to computers around you basically. Like I mentioned it will only be of any use to you if you have a 3G signal. It sucks the battery life out of your phone, so it is best used when you can connect your phone to a wall outlet (or car charger). I've had a history of really crappy ISP's, so in my experience the connection is way more reliable than landline connections. I was surprised how well it works and how fast it is. It is way faster than an internet connection that is strictly on your phone, mainly because most of the time you wait when loading a webpage on your phone is waiting for your phone's processor to display the information it's receiving on the page, it has nothing to do with the speed of the connection itself. Economics wise, I have Tmobile and I pay $95/month before taxes for unlimited internet, texts, and calls. I think unlimited internet only adds about $30 a month to most plans, which is cheaper the cable inernet in most cases. You may want to check with your cell phone carrier if they set a limit (like ATT recently did) OR if they slow down your 3G speed after you reach a certain

So I've discovered the most amazing invention ever: wireless tethering. Who needs a hardline internet connection anymore? I just transmit a wireless internet signal from my cell phone, meaning I have broadband internet speeds wherever I have 3G coverage, which is regularly faster than my landline speeds (and also more reliable, ironically). And I can go anywhere with my laptop and have wireless internet. Amazing!

Locked: An incredible amount has happened to me in

An incredible amount has happened to me in just the past few weeks. A few months ago I figured out that I really missed college. Getting an MBA was always in the back in my mind, but I figured now was the absolutely best time to do so while I'm still young. I decided to attend Washington University in St Louis (which is going to get really confusing on the resuming since I graduated from Washington State) and I have been here about 4 days now. It has been really amazing stepping into an environment where everyone is really collegial and interested in learning again, though I do miss stepping out of the working world a bit. Everyone here is amazingly brilliant, so I've had to step up my game a little bit, but it definitely isn't anything I can't handle. In the process of moving, I lost my best friend in Charlotte, which was a sad occurance. Besides him, I did establish a really good group of friends for myself which was really tough to leave and I hate the fact I have to start all over again. Currently renting out my condo in downtown Charlotte for (about) my mortgage. Had a girlfriend for a while, but obviously that didn't last when I moved. But honestly, I'm absolutely loving St Louis. It's really an amazing city and one that I didn't know much about or even knew existed. I'm already in a kickball league with one of my friends from Wazzu, which is amazing. Still (tentatively) planning to move back to Charlotte when I graduate, though that will greatly depend on the job opportunities at the time. I am a lot more focused in what I want to do now, instead of following the bandwagon on what everyone else thinks I should do, which is something I should've realized a long time ago.
