So for realz this movie is coming to town. Two showings, one on Monday 9/7 at 8pm or Tuesday at 5:30. If there are interested parties let me know. Katy indicated to me just a minute ago that Tuesday would be slightly better but monday night would be fine as well.

Interesting story I was relating to Josh the other night. After getting really excited to see this climbing movie I looked at the website to see where and when it would be playing in Anchorage. Turns out, it wasn't. So with the help of a little bourbon I send an email to the general manager at Bears Tooth expressing my disappointment that of all places in AK let alone the US they were not getting a showing. My reasoning that most of these guys train in the AK range and probably have on several occasions eaten at the Mooses Tooth post climb. So the general manager actually gets back to me asking where I had heard that they weren't getting a showing. And if had been from a staff person then there might be some hell to pay, they just so happened to be negotiating for a run come late August and into early September. At any rate I have Josh with me now... this shit should be pretty intense and hopefully a good watch.

So for the next year, at least until a habitable portion of our house is built, we will be staying up at Katy's dads place by goldenview. So I have to see what internet is even available for him as we are taking over the internet bill. Katy will be working remotely and plus her and the boys watch a fair bit of netflix and the like so we will need some serious dataz each month for that. I don't think I'll be traveling around the deep parts of the state much but I might and it would be great to maintain cell coverage. I should say that some of the various pluses of living down south is cheap internet and phone service. I pay $60 a month for pretty solid comcast internet, and $30 a month for pre-paid cell. Granted T mobile while cheap has the shittiest coverage imaginable and I get no data in AK otherwise I sure as shit would keep that plan. I love the cheapness and ease of prepaid plans and would consider one of the GCI prepaids. If you guys have any experience with that let me know, like I didn't know Tmobile prepaid wouldn't give me data up there since they don't readily admit that service is different between their contract and prepaid customers. Cheap fruits, vegetables and internet are the few things I have to give up to move back.

We will be changing wireless carriers to something where we actually get data in AK as well as taking over home internet as part of our staying with Katy's dad. So who do you have for cell service, do you like it, is it expensive as all hell. Who's the best game in town for home internet?

It's hard to ever get a read on what is exciting to him, unless he's telling us about something. In general he's got all of his close cousins up there and he is always talking about fun stuff he wants to do with them. I think he'll be ok. He will be going to goldenview this fall for 7th grade, that hillside ghetto is a rough place so I'm sure he'll have a tough time.

But I feel my real contribution will come in the form of adventure gear that anyone might want to borrow. I for one fully intend on getting myself out hiking and camping with some frequency and with varying levels of difficulty and adventure. More importantly I intend on dragging some of you with me and my gear supply list can take any unprepared fool and turn them into at least a better prepared fool.

Yes indeed its good to be heading up. Shit seems pretty well worked out except all the work that it takes to get our house sold. We are going to start working on the land up on birch. If I get the time I'll probably just roam around this fall with a chainsaw doing some clearing. But hopefully we can get builders lined up during the winter and get starting next spring. Not sure what sort of architectural specialty you have Mike, but we have some house plans that we're going to be playing around with a bit to better suit our needs.

moving, for realz. for a long time anyway. Katy has permission to work remotely for wizards and I had an interview with the state public health lab for their bioterrorism defense unit (federally funded position). So yeah, with at least one job set we are moving. I figure I have a pretty good shot with the state job since it requires BSL-3 experience which I'm going to guess is pretty rare in general and more rare for non-PhD's that might be in AK.

Get to it guys. Make some teams, get the word out. This year I'm going for a 1000 mile month, which is going to be pretty tough with only 19 work days for me to do it in.
I work with probably the same mix of people when it comes to unexpected things. Those who would awkwardly look at some strange gift, those who immediately move it aside, and of course the ones who proudly display whatever new weird shit comes there way. I fall proudly in the last category. One of the nice things about being the latter is eventually people realize what you're doing and intentionally bring you weird shit. Currently around my desk is a broken coffee much that says "Classy and Sassy", a small stuffed eagle, a plastic King Cake baby, a sticky jelly eyeball, a diary with Rorshach from the Watchmen on the cover, a framed photobooth picture from a holiday party where I convinced a bunch of people to grab random objects from the hotel lobby, a shitty hand drawn picture on a napkin of a coworkers feet under the wall of a bathroom stall, a couple large nerf guns... Yeah all that stuff isn't mine, it's just showed up over the years and it sits in my cubicle in the main office area. I also have one of the most prominent and visible cubicles as it's on the end of the row right by the main walkway, and the walls are only about 4' high so all my stuff is pretty visible.

It's exceedingly rare I have any sort of dream I can remember for long, but Josh's continued and occasional posts reminded me on one last night. A big group of us are wandering around something similar to one of those indoor/outdoor malls. Mostly it was the same group as was just in Vegas. Someone mentions being hungry and they know this great milkshake place up ahead. So we all make our way to this really strange restaurant, it was decorated a little bit like Willy Wonka's factory from Tim Burton's version. The specialty was milkshakes there, but they would put either dead or unconscious kittens in each clear cup. The cups had some kind of stirring or vortex system that would twist the kittens around in circles and you could see them spin around and around. When you ordered your drink the server would hand you your kitten to hold and pet while you waited, then when the cup was ready they would take it back and somehow incapacitate it. Then hand your drink to you with this swirling kitten in it. I think the milkshake did taste really good, I ordered chocolate malt and got a tabby kitten in it.

Found this in the section Examples in Fiction, "In an episode of the Adult Swim cartoon series Metalocalypse, the other members of the band submerge guitarist Toki in a "liquid oxygen isolation chamber" while recording an album in the Mariana Trench."

I think about this regularly, but I also am in shady ass places riding my bike, at shady ass hours occasionally. I also work in a city with relatively small amount of violent crime and live in a city with even less so it's not like I really have to worry about it. Interesting to note in the last several years about 20% of all homicides in Seattle were in fact police shootings. Yeah that sounds high, but it was 6 out of 30 total for last year. On one hand I don't have a problem using force, even deadly force to protect myself. But knowing how I typically react to stressful situations I can say I would mostly likely crumple under the stress and just become a regular victim statistic, or if I were to carry a weapon I would escalate the situation unnecessarily to the point were someone would get get hurt due to my own bravado. I have a suspicion that a lot of "self defense" homicides are kinda due to the second situation where the person with a gun actively provokes, or at least doesn't attempt to cool the situation down, to the point where shooting in "self defense" is the only option left. The law of course seems to favor the story of the one left alive, unless of course it's Nick Cage in ConAir. So also being in a City where I'm almost as likely to get shot by a cop than a criminal is an odd feeling. Doesn't leave me with a whole lot of trust in the police force of Seattle, but of course I don't really threaten anyone with violence so I'm unlikely to ever get myself into a situation where I could be shot by an officer. So I'm going to apologize for this little diatribe and I hope its even remotely comprehensible. I hear the argument all the time that the police have a right to protect themselves from harm, and deadly force is of course one of the totally justifiable methods of doing so. But that kind of comes down to a value judgement that the life of an officer is somehow inherently more

I listened to that when it was on air. It's kind of depressing that this is my reality at work every day. Grants are drying up and harder to get. Scientists are jumping ship at major universities or getting ground down to the most basic, barely innovative kind of research. Private money is predominantly going towards tech innovation in science, which is good and bad. Good in that the capabilities and speed at which scientists can now run assays is greatly expanded. Bad because this new technology is so expensive good labs cant afford it, and the money they used to use in the past to buy new equipment is being spent on the new tech development. Basically the only way to break even or make money these days is to chase whatever popular disease is in the media, or be developing boner pills, fat people drugs, or any of the various other First World Problem ailments.

You should buy a machete. Good for spider webs and moving things around a little bit farther away than arms reach. Also my experience with rats has been rather positive, except that they are really resistant to anesthesia and will chew through their own skin and into their bowels sometimes if they have injection site irritation... which is gross. And what you might be thinking of is Hauntavirus, but that's usually more mouse pee rather than rats. Agree on hornets. Fuck those guys.

Another year down for me. Since this is the last day... work day, of May I thought I might go ahead and list my bike commuting numbers for the month and some of the things I've seen. By the time I get back to my car today I will have ridden about 868 miles over 21 work days. All but three days I rode just shy of 42 miles round trip, two days were 45 r/t, and 1 day was 27. This beats my last years record of 823 miles which I thought was already about the best I could possibly do. It's also my very first year that I rode every single day, it helped that it was a good month for weather. I'll probably end up ranked in the top 50 riders in terms of miles out of like 14000 total, and in total I spent about 60 hours in the saddle. I'm tired, really, really tired. That feeling has seeped into every single thought and aspect of my being. On the weekends I've tried to make plans, but kids allowing I often just find myself laying down and not moving. I'm so tired I have kinda started to understand what crippling depression feels like. But I also feel stronger in general than I have for a long time and the days where the tiredness isn't as bad I actually feel good and quite peppy, so next month when I cut back on distance I think I'm going to start feeling really good most of the time. Now some of the shit I've seen. First of all I can count about 4 times that I have actually seen shit, real human shit just off the side of the sidewalk. Since a lot of my ride goes through areas where homeless people camp this isn't all that surprising really. I saw a guy on a unicycle several miles away from anywhere in particular, along one of the busiest and shittiest roads I commute along which has no shoulder, no sidewalk, and the speed limit is 45mph and most of the vehicles are large freight trucks. Hella ballsy as shit. I saw cyclist get a speeding ticket, he then complained to me before racing on past me,

Then the whole angry red dot thing was weird. And turns out still only ranked like 27 online. Yup, it were a good night.

Is it bad that I have been so disconnected from what happened in the Oscars, even though it's now Tuesday, that I don't know how Big H's picks panned out? Yes I'm on a computer right now, yes I could google all this shit and find out. DON'T CARE.

MrFood: Sorry But you’ll have to go find

Sorry But you’ll have to go find last years answers on your own. 1. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before? Real ski mountaineering, climbed all the way to the top of Mt. Hood and skied pretty much all the way down 2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? Made none that I remember, kept none that I remember 3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Hanus’s, Hughes’s, bunch of people at work… lots of babies this year 4. Did anyone close to you die? My grandfather, my namesake passed away early in 2012. It was a shitty trip to Kansas 5. What countries did you visit? Made it to Mexico this year. 6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013? Some kind of personal growth or career path, or just path in general I can be excited about. 7. What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? I don’t think I will remember a specific day this year. 8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? I finally made my goal of an 800 mile bike to work month. 9. What was your biggest failure? Personal Failure? Well I got turned back on Mt Stuart yet again this year. That’s now three times I’ve bailed. 10. Did you suffer illness or injury? None that were noteworthy. 11. What was the best thing you bought? New car to replace the old Exploder, my Mitsubishi Outlander is hella sweet. 12. Whose behavior merited celebration? Maybe I was really self centered this year but for #12 and 13 I really don’t know, I guess I wasn’t paying enough attention to other people this year. 13. Whose behavior made you appalled? See #12 14. Where did most of your money go? Overall probably mortgage and childcare, I still spend all of my personal monies on mountaineering gear, but this year we did lay down some fatty stacks to have a sweet
