It's Oscar Night!!! Big event in the Hanus Haus, so I figure I could post this here. Thanks to Josh and Erik for hooking me up with the movies to round out the major categories. John's Best Picture List from Best to Worst 12 Years a Slave Gravity Philomena Dallas Buyers Club Her The Wolf of Wall Street Nebraska Captain Phillips American Hustle Who is going to win? 12 Years a Slave. Who should win? 12 Years a Slave. Who is going to win best actor? Matthew McConaughey. Who should win? It should be a tie between McConaughey and Ejiofor. Who is going to win best actress? Cate Blanchett. Who should win? Cate Blanchett, even though I hated her character in Blue Jasmine, but that was the point. Side note, I hated August: Osage County even though the performances were strong. I don't like scripts that are just characters constantly yelling at one another (Long Day's Journey into the Night). Who is going to win best supporting actor? Jared Leto. Who should win? Jared Leto. I think this was a strong category this year minus Bradley Cooper. Michael Fassbender gave the performance of a career that I really loved in 12 Years a Slave, but so did Jared Leto. Who is going to win best supporting actress? Lupita Nyong'o. Who should win? Jennifer Lawrence. Loved her performance in American Hustle, better than Silver Linings in my book, a true stand out. Who is going to win best director? Alfonso Cuaron. Who should win best director? Alfonso Cuaron. Gonna bet on a split between picture/director this year. I won't go into the writing categories, but I will say I hope 'Her' wins screenplay. That, my friends, was a beautifully written movie. What are your picks?

Interesting post, still don't understand why you devote so much time to re-watching the Star Trek series when there is so much more good entertainment to move on to, but no judgement, I re-watched the TMNT cartoons on VHS, Clear and Present Danger and The Rock more times than I can count. Pet peeve I try not to let bother me, but usually does because I'm an ass hole: Suspension of disbelief in entertainment medias, regardless of classification of Science Fiction. Don't understand why people would be dissatisfied with something because they don't find it believable. I typically try to learn from medias outside of entertainment, and even then I just end up forgetting because I have a tough time internalizing concepts that don't interest me in general (I don't know how I'm making it work in the engineering world). Are people trying to learn from television and movies, does that set certain movies apart from the pack? I think you shut yourself off to a lot of quality product with this notion and set a standard too high to meet, thus creating an inevitable destiny of disappointment in your movie and television choices. Yeah, Chuck fucks my shit up...

Just got done reading the latest article. Interesting stuff. I'm not asking this because I'm offended, but the article does bring about a theme (of which there are many) I'm interested in exploring: Do you think a majority of your time with friends is wasted time? The older I get, and the less beholden I am to social, familial, and professional obligations, I find that I am slowly becoming more like the ‘nerd’ that the author describes. I’m sorry, friends, blind dates, even you, random girl at a bar. Your time may be better spent elsewhere. I just don’t understand. I'll be honest, I'm not buying it. I think in your article you have left out a variety of key points surrounding your personality to enhance the ones that you value the most at the time of writing the article. You don't mention the amount of time spent with friends, the conversations had between them, the several instances of going out of your way due to the feelings of others. My guess is you don't mention them because it would take away from your objective. As I said, interesting stuff.

So, now that I have seen all 10 of this year's best picture Oscar nominees, this is how I would rank them: 1) King's Speech 2) Black Swan 3) The Social Network 4) Toy Story 3 5) Winter's Bone 6) 127 Hours 7) The Fighter 8) Inception 9) The Kids Are All Right 10) True Grit I still think Social Network is going to take home the prize and my favorite movie of the year isn't even on the list (KICK ASS!!! I LOVE YOU NICOLAS CAGE!!!). Colin Firth and Natalie Portman are shoe-ins for the acting prizes, but for some real entertainment, catch all the Supporting Actor movies. To me, this is always the category with the most entertainment value and talent.

1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before? I went skydiving. And if this question said will never do again that would also apply 2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? Didn't make any new year's resolutions 3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Joy & Joe gave birth to Josie 4. Did anyone close to you die? Although we could have been closer, a death shook our local BP community 5. What countries did you visit? Australia 6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010? A budget 7. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? 9-10-10, the day I proposed to a pretty girl 8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Other than the obvious #7, for work feeling like I completed my work performance contract in 2010, for hobbies hosting a Scared Scriptless show 9. What was your biggest failure? Being sensitive to other's rather than trying to push my opinion on the situation 10. Did you suffer illness or injury? I did pretty all right in 2010, I recommend Vitamin C and D every morning 11. What was the best thing you bought? I am a big fan of stuff we collect from our trips (Australian Art, Cat Poo Coffee, Improv Book) 12. Whose behavior merited celebration? To be honest, I have been impressed with all my friend's this year, Looking back, I believe 2010 was a step forward for most 13. Whose behavior made you appalled? This was the year I fell into the 'I hate the media' crowd, so if you can conglomerate into a single entity... 14. Where did most of your money go? Big ticket items were loans, vehicle, Australia 15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Going to Vegas both times 16. What song will always remind you of 2010? What the fuck user on idkfa would use Kesha here? This user would... 17. Compared to this time last year,

Dramas I have enjoyed: Shawshank Redemption Garden State Crash Into the Wild The Social Network Big Fish Truman Show I tried to stick to ones that didn't have action sequences to drive the audience's attention. I'm kind of with Lee on this category, these are the ones I felt emotionally invested in when watching them the first time in the theater. In trying to find similarities, I would probably say great acting performances drove a lot of these to be great movies rather than simply story or film direction. I will forever think Jim Carrey got screwed for not picking up an Oscar nod for Truman Show. I thought it was an ingenious combination of comedy and drama.

Let me start by saying I thought Black Swan was a really good movie. However, it is not a movie you will want to see twice just because the degradation of the main character is rather uncomfortable. But in terms of 2010 movies, this definitely ranks up at the top for me. There have been a couple of times this year that I have seen dramas with friends where I thought it was a pretty good movie, but other responses include, "I just wasn't into it." Respectable opinion, and one that leads to Transformers always lapping the profits of these movies by an order of magnitude. Plus I acknowledge I'm more into movies than most. But it does beg the question, what movies in the DRAMA category do you enjoy the most? Why?

Yeah, I grabbed a scene set up for slips that was suppose to involve Joe Miller. You did a great job by setting up Joe Miller in hell. But did he die and go to hell? Did the devil come up and offer him a deal? Did the devil transport him to hell to make a deal? What was the deal? Could the scene have gone beyond the deal to the consequences of the transaction? When I say clear direction, I just mean the set up didn't go anywhere. Also, you'll notice I never say that specific players cause this. We all do this, I took this note for myself in moving bodies when I played last time. You get so caught up in what the audience wants to hear you start losing track of playing out the scene you set up. Most of the time it gets a good laugh, but the true skill is getting a laugh from the story rather than the line. Also, I'm not harping on choices, just using them as an example. Rather than inject more description of what is going on, why not, in this scene, loudly say, "THE DEAL HAS BEEN MADE, I SEND YOU BACK TO EARTH!" and just exit the stage. That is a clear movement forward, also gives opportunities for more players to get involved. Just an example. I think we shouldn't be afraid of using large transitions more often if we feel the scene has played it's course in the current environment. Warren did do well. Perhaps because he had nothing to focus on other than his performance? His panda was one of my highlights I'm sorry you got such uproarious laughter for your performance in Family Dinner. Next time you can be one of the other five characters that odds are no one really notices or laughs at. COME ON, GIVE ME SOME CREDIT FOR THE GOOD AUDIENCE!!! And after that awesome compliment, all I get is that role fits you. Also, I disagree with you on the stage being too full, I think you just didn't like only playing 5 games. The max people on stage were 6 at the very end. I would say you should look at

December 18th Show I was pretty happy with how the show went. It was exciting to host again as this is one of my favorite spots to be in for an improv show. The crowd was particularly awesome and thanks to all of our friends who came out and supported us. I think the players fed off the crowd's energy and stepped up as well. Something I am very proud of is that I was harping on hosting for the last six months to both troupe members / friends and I felt I demonstrated the point in this show. My comments have to come with a disclaimer, because I was distracted by games list, lights, navigating pathways and thinking of things to say for the next intro. All things considered, though, I still think there were a few items worth mentioning. I won't seriously rate the show because I did not perform or watch closely. If you asked me to blindly guess, I would say 7/10. On the logistical side there needs to be dedicated box office and lights that are internal to the troupe. Eric's sister is awesome for helping us out, but if we want to continue starting on time, the box office has to miss 10-15 minutes of the show and I don't think it is fair to her and we won't be able to count on her every time. My vision would be for someone in the troupe to sit out a show on rotation and do box office and then come in for lights (assuming we stay in the same type of venues). Also on logistics, there needs to be something better for the introduction between lights down and host up. Something needs to drive people to want someone on stage, which is usually music, but our technical capabilities are limiting. Finally, the packed house made staging off stage difficult. Pop-Up story book shouldn't have been told facing away from the audience. As for the improv itself, I think better energy and better audience participation improved the quality. However, I still think we suffer in our scene games (limited for this show, moving bodies and

You just went on a rant about Blind Man Bluff's because I put your game at the bottom of my list. I HATE YOU TOO. Erik and I spent a good portion of the time on g-chat today talking about improv. I will sum up the points: 1) Set leadership expectations so we can get some organization up in here 2) We want to know what other players think about the state of our shows and the troupe. Erik and I teamed up last night at the rehearsal for some smack down, but everyone else just sits and stares when we talk about 'global' issues rather than specific games. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING IN THERE? I don't want to lay down the smack talk because I think we are right, I want to lay it down to figure out what people want out of this troupe. We will not settle with silence, I want to hear it directly from other players if they think we are beating a dead horse and they like things the way they are. WE WILL NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT!!! 3) My personal opinion, apathy is a bigger problem than poison. 4) PLAY PLAY PLAY PLAY PLAY PLAY PLAY, but not until some of these issues are solved. It kills me that you think 'I hate my job' is an interesting enough objective to float a game. BOO YAH.

Ramblings of an improv madman... AND I TRIED SO HARD TO MAKE YOU LOVE THE DATING GAME!!! I thought we had about a 4.5 / 10 show last night, and I will not let up that things are not really changing because we are content with putting up the same type of performance every time. I don't mean this to be a derogatory comment, but I am just pointing out I don't see a whole lot changing in our routine. Our leaders still host the same, our games list are similar, gag games are prevelent at the end, rehearsal feedback is still the same. If we want to get out of the 5/10 range, a lot of these things need to change. Best game of the night: Deck the Halls. For all the work we have put into singing, I think it finally paid off. I, being the ass hole I am however, am still skeptical that this means we are getting better at singing. Worst game of the night: Asides. Four players, story didn't go anywhere, cut-off was wierd. Close runner-up, Three-Headed Santa. The format just doesn't work out for that game. I thought the hosting was the anvil tied around our ankles last night. Who the fuck plays with that kid during our games? I won't talk anymore on that. Badgering the audience, making reference to the kid several times, I can go on. Also, one of my bigger pet peeves: We go through the exercise of setting up a random challenge game, he gets the book out and gets the numbers, then instead of reading it and making it sound new and invigorating, he says FUCK IT WE'RE PLAYING PANEL OF EXPERTS. We are getting into a downward spiral of needing to feed off the audience. We should be able to supply our own energy. A good example, if the audience doesn't show energy our first game seems to be like pulling teeth to get the troupe into it. The audience energy shouldn't be a factor for us, we should always be selling it. I won't go so far as to say the audience isn't a factor at all, but I think we should

I just don't think the songs go over very well. I think if you play games like the following: Irish Drinking Song Doo Run Run (Not Doo Run Die) Try that on for size Hoe Down Questions to name a few, they are chosen because you are skillful at them. This is a personal preference, but whenever I watch shows and there is a song that doesn't have a story throughout, I don't think there is justification of doing it. And rhyming a full story is very difficult. Not ragging on us, just saying it is not our strong suit.

I think you have great perspectives because we like objection and chain murder, we think some people could play in a team better and we all agree sex is a cop out a majority of the time.
All right, I was told the other night Josh put this section up for me and it got me thinking I haven't been giving it the attention I should. Sorry Josh, let's remedy. I thought the last show went pretty well, but I still think we are stuck in 'average' shows. I don't think any of our shows get out of the 5/10 category and I feel helpless because we all contribute in one way or another. I'm looking for ways to break through the 5/10 category. Perhaps two keys to my perception: 1) Better hosting - I maintain good hosting can get us through wierd audiences 2) Games list - not every game we play is good for the audience and we don't necessarily play every game on the list well as a group (thank you singing) Thoughts? ??

Maybe stir the pot like the old days of idkfa? Interesting read. I think you are getting more aggressive by the entry in these articles. You should have been in our conversation Saturday night, because I think it ties a lot into Robbie's point of negative versus positive thinking. I would have very much liked to hear your input. I guess I think it is kind of interesting to me that you make a big deal of the point: ...question everything, and everyone, and ultimately come to only your very own conclusions. But then the tone of the rest of the article focuses on this perspective being the only correct one: If this isn’t obvious, if at some point you’ve bought into, or paid for the things here, then I’m sorry. I also find it kind of wierd you haven't read The Secret, but are prepared to write a whole section on why it is wrong. Book club entry in the making? I guess I just see opposites when you say be strong and come to your own conclusions and at the same time put such a strong negativity on the opposite point of view.
