Had this dream last night featuring most of the people who would see this post on idkfa. I dreamed we were all planning a move and were debating where in the Middle East to move to. It was narrowed down to Dubai or Qatar. Some people were also arguing for Africa - either Zimbabwe or Dakar. We were all siting around Mike & Kristen's house with brochures arguing about it.

Teens who want to spend four plus hours a week volunteering at the library during the summer do tend to be a bit more.... academic than otherwise. (Confession I started my career as a summer volunteen; I was not the cool exception to this rule.)

Work thing. We have teens at the library doing weekly projects for us, we call them VolunTEENs. (Librarians LOVE puns.) We have bought 3 Google Chrome books that we are putting through their paces to see if they are a feasible, cheaper alternate to the expensive laptops we currently buy for teen/public use. We have the volunTEENS testing them, trying to use them for normal stuff, trying to break them. Two teen girls are "working" (playing) on a chrome book for this project. One teen girl is SUPER pretty. They yell across the room to a fourteen year-old boy "Hey Cody*, what is your favorite website?" The boy's face - priceless. Pure unadulterated fear. He stammers while asking why they want to know. I left as they were explaning and before I heard his answer. But yeah, don't ask a teen boy that. Probably a valid test of our computers, but not the testing we are doing. *Names changed to protect the very sweet, hardworking teen boy. He would also be embarrassed to hear I called him sweet.

Clearly I'm the spouse. ;) I've had mine since Christmas and I still really like it. Random thoughts after reading your thoughts: Battery life comes in consistently at about 6 days for me. I don't like that it doesn't give you an easier way to check that, but eventually it will show a low battery symbol on the home screen. If it shows that at 8:05am right after I get to work, it will die by 5:25pm, 10 minutes before I get home. A decent amount of warning depending on how many notifications you get. YMMV I really need to deactivate the music controls. I accidentally triggered my music during church. Fortunately it was only Elton John that started playing. Water resistancy is great. I've showered, swum, done dishes, and bathed the baby in it. No issues. If I leave my phone in my office while I"m on the reference desk, the bluetooth is almost in range. So it will continually connect and disconnect which causes lots of vibrating and notifying and probably drains my battery. When I'm walking through Fred Meyer or Costco and pushing the cart, it doesn't count my steps. My old fitbit used to give me almost 2 miles of credit if I did both of those in a row. It makes me irrationally angry not to get that credit. So I do this thing where I try to push the cart one handed. Also I should probably work out more efficient routes through the stores. I love the firework goal achieved and I'm enjoying letting it set goals for me, pushing me more each day. And then I fail many days in a row and it back pedals on the goals. It's fun. I like to imagine its tiny robot brain saying, FINE, you won't walk 7,000 steps, can you please just leave your office today? Also my baby has learned to hit the band until it wakes up which amuses me.

That's a not great way of doing leave time. We have everyone submit leave time at the same time for the upcoming year. And then decisions are made based off a number of factors, including seniority. However we make sure the same person doesn't have all the "good" days off (around holidays, spring break, etc) every year or even twice in a year. We have two support staff, the most senior person doesn't get the week around Thanksgiving and around Christmas off every year, we make her alternate. Otherwise it really sucks and you can have someone whose been there a decade but is still the low man in seniority and has never had Christmas off. So boo bad management practice. But yay for an epic bike trip!

Something a bit lighter... There is well known within the Alaskan librarian community a specific patron. He calls various libraries and asks to have the librarian read him the list of Tom Clancy titles. And then to repeat it slower. Eventually it becomes obvious that he is "enjoying" this in a non-literary manner. The librarians typically respond to this by hanging up on him and emailing the state librarian listserv. Over the years (he calls a few libraries over a few weeks, takes a few months off, reappears, etc) he has been reported to the state troopers. Librarians tell him that now. Personally I expect that this is not very high on the list of cases for the troopers to solve. I guess this most recent time when he called Delta Junction he asked to be read a list of Stephen Hawking titles before the big finish with the Clancy. No mail librarian has ever been asked this, so presumably he asks them a different cover story and calls until he gets a woman. A male Alaskan librarian made a youtube recording of himself reading the titles that could be played for this man. Two conclusions: 1. The breadth of things to which people will pleasure themselves never ceases to amaze me. 2. Librarians and listservs and a little free time result in some amazing stuff.

Did you all notice that at one of the levels of sponsorship for the Reading Rainbow kickstarter the reward is a private dinner with LeVar Burton and getting to try on the Geordi viser? And of course the kickstarter is not without controversy. http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2014/05/28/you-might-want-to-reconsider-that-donation-to-the-reading-rainbow-kickstarter/ Personally as long as you don't view the show as "teach kids to read" but "teach kids to love reading" then I think it is still a very positive thing. Both goals are good and worthy.

Dear government types: my husband is the nicest guy in the planet and would never knowingly harm a person or target infrastructure.

Organized tours - be careful. They all have single children/grandchildren. My parents used to ROUTINELY come back from cruises with email addresses of the children and grandchildren of people they had met, usually their dining companions. They were all "nice single young men." I never emailed any of them. And either my parents weren't giving out my email address, just letting me make the first move, or (more likely) the guys also chose to never email me because I never heard from any of them. But this is a thing. Be wary.

I must add that to my list of things "girls don't do" so I can continue to fit into the monolithic and homogenous view of female-kind and not veer dangerously towards havng my own opinion and just being a person. I didn't really like 2001 a Space Odyssey, but I assumed I just wasn't in the right mood when I watched it and found it a bit too slow. Somedays you need it slow, and somedays you need many fast explosions.

There are a bunch of really interesting class/genderism issues at play in the Harding/Kerrigan scandal. They were both born poor, but Nancy was much better at appearing rich. Her interview demeanor, her physical appearance, everything gave the appearance of a rich girl and skating is a sport that rewards at least the appearance of affluence. Harding outskated her, but Kerrigan got the media attention and the lucrative endorsement checks. Nancy was America's delicate princess while Harding was a brashy blond tomboy from the trailer park/wrong side of the tracks. Besides the class issues (everyone knew Harding was poor, most people didn't know that about Kerrigan), there's this entire thing about how America wants our female athletes pretty and polished and not too athletic looking. Kerrigan hit that sweet spot, but Harding was too muscular, too unapologetically athletic, not feminine enough. Anyone who is interested and I can link you to a bunch of feminist blog stuff, including links to differences in endorsements received by female athletes.

I just finished as a judge for a statewide creative writing contest. I judged the 3rd-5th grade category. Very happy that we chose a sci fi story as our third place winner. I think too often sci fi/fantasy gets lost in the shuffle in literature and doesn't get the respect it deserved. Plus it was well written and interesting/complex plot. I hope the kid keeps writing!

Not anonymously, I just don't link them on twitter because too many authors have twitter alerts and respond to every mention of their book ever. And I've heard horror stories from other reviewers. I get blurbed as the magazine and not as me because my name doesn't really have cachet with readers. If you look at the "editorial reviews" listings on amazon pages, I pop up. I write for School Library Journal and then my name is at the end of the review.
I have started reviewing books for a magazine and for a well respected graphic novel website. It's fun, but I don't talk about it much on twitter or online because I don't want to invite the wrath (or commentary in general) of authors. However today I saw one of my reviews blurbed on a book (though not as me, but as the magazine). That was cool!

Pregnancy gives you crazy dreams and mine have been epic. Last night I dreamed I had the ability to slide through dimensions to alternate realities through portholes I could see. Sometimes when you slid through a porthole it was by accident, othertimes on purpose to run away from danger. And sometimes you were still yourself, but most of the time when you slid through a porthole to a new reality/dimension you were someone new. Thus for most of the dream I was Captain Kirk going between versions of the Enterprise and other starships. At one point I stole a gun that allowed me to create my own reality/dimension portholes and it created a bubble atmosphere so I could fly through space without a space ship. So awesome. Because I kept accidentally trying to fly my spaceship through portholes only to discover on the other side that my spaceship was now stuck inside a building or cave or what not. I woke up sad that it didn't exist even as a tv show. I've always loved alternate reality stories, episodes of tv where they go to an alternate universe, and even Sliders (well up until the third season).

I love children's librarians. They're wonderful, hardworking, dedicated, sweet souls who want to do the best possible for their patrons. They give out good intentions, sunshine, and rainbows everywhere they go. But not a one of them should ever be allowed to handle money. I'm sorting out expense sheets. They received gift cards to various places (Costco, craft stores, general Visa cards) for program expenses. We started with ONE template and master form to track expenses on. We now have 6 forms saved in five places with six different file names and six different tracking systems. Some info is on every form. Some of it is in one or two places. Some of it is nowhere. Pulling together a year end report may take weeks. These are excel spreadsheets with many many many tabs, some created at random. And I'm pregnant but I could use a drink. Fortunately everyone kept all their receipts. God bless librarians who never threw anything away and happily file into labeled folders. I could just recreate entirely from receipts. Might be quicker.

I take it from him and add it to the 3 inch stack of cards behind our desk. 15 minutes later he calmly and sheepishly comes up and asks if that card was his. it was.
My redneck is showing, but Dixie Chicks, "Wide Open Spaces" because it came out as I went to college in Arizona (wide open spaces in the west) and the description of the parents in that song pretty much encapsulated my parents reactions to me going to college. The "Saras" have gotten me through basically every breakup ever. (Sara Evans, Sara Bareilles, Sarah McLachlan). I have strong associations with stupid dance songs. I learned the macarena from the older "cooler" kids on a church trip and I always think about it and that trip. "Hey Mickey" reminds me of my friend Tiffany who knew all the moves to the dance to that song and would lead us all in it during middle school dances. Learned "Mambo Number 5" on an exchange trip to Germany in high school (six months before it became big in the US my hipster wanted me to tell you) and there was a bar dance to that song too but it never made it over to the US.

lizinthelibrary: I've read a couple of those articles too.

I've read a couple of those articles too. Here are my convoluted thoughts. It's really really really hard to recognize your own position of privilege. I'm going to use privilege and power pretty much interchangeably. If you don't know what I'm talking about with privilege, read this classic article about white privilege: http://www.amptoons.com/blog/files/mcintosh.html We all have privilege to differing degrees because of factors not entirely within our control such as race, socio-economic status, ability, business acumen, sexuality, gender, and a bunch of different factors. I'm white and thus have some privilege. I've walked into an innercity, predominently black school on library business and been waived past security measures. The black father behind me bringing a forgotten lunch (who looked like he belonged more than me) went through the metal detectors and an extended questioning to get into the school. I don't have power/privilege because of my gender. My brother and I lived in the same dorm years apart. I was routinely harassed by guys in cars and on foot at a certain intersection near that dorm. There were times at night it wasn't safe for me to walk alone. They actually had a safety patrol so I didn't have to. My brother never had this issue. However because of my sexuality, I have the privilege of talking about my life partner and people assume the correct gender. We all have differing levels of privilege. It varies from situation to situation. The Penny Arcade guys were bullied growing up. There they lacked the power because of (I don't know but guessing) lack of social acumen and athletic ability (or whatever, just going with the two most common). In some ways, they still see themselves as victims. Many of their fans likely (again going with stereotypes and typical social patterns) were similarly bullied as children/young adults. And all the fanboys who rally around the

Hey, I now understand why some of my friends and loved ones are gay - they were abused and didn't spend enough time with their father. Fortunately this helpful children's book explains it all. http://awfullibrarybooks.net/gayness-explained/ (FYI That is a librarian blog that highlights the worst books that are still in library collections and really need weeded.)

Chick-Fil-A and Hobby Lobby, are doing Christian business the wrong way. Doing it right: Braum's dairy and grocery. They own all parts of the dairy to maintain freshness. They won't ship more than the 300 miles away (or half a day's drive) to maintain the freshness and because their truck drivers can drive to the location and back in one day and still spend the night with their family. So the only truck drivers who never have to spend a night away from home. That's family values I can get behind. And we ate ice cream there multiple times while in Oklahoma last week.

I like that delineation of types of boycotting. I was raised on the second "avoid as much as possible" style. My parents can't stand how Wal-mart treats their labor and what they do to small towns so we didn't shop at wally world if avoidable at all. When I first moved to Alaska and had not yet discovered that Freddy's had everything in the world (because grocery stores in Kansas weren't like that) and Target hadn't been opened I went to Wal-mart for an ironing board but not since. But as Mike said, I have that ecnomic choice. And I make it. Basically a thousand small choices do more good than that guy who screams at the top of his lungs. I am on the board of a non-profit and I've convinced them to move our website domain away from GoDaddy because I hate their misogynistic advertisments and their stand on SOPA. There are a thousand other little things too I suppose. So I will go and see it, and thank you all for making me feel better about it. And I'll still make an LGBTQ friendly charity donation. And perhaps more importantly for the cause, the library is hosting an LGBTQ teen club (easier for some kids to come to than the one at their school) and there is a guy who is going from library location to location blasting and threatening staff members with profanity about the club (apparently we're trying to convert kids to be gay, sigh). He's also been on our facebook page, but we deleted it. He's one more tirade away from a year ban, and we're ready for him. In my opinion, offering a safe space for the next generation and protecting them from idiots as much as possible is more important than which movie I see.
