I don't know much about any of these systems, but Costco does have some Western Digital products at decent prices. This is the one Travis and I were looking at, but they have some fancier versions as well. Again, I don't know much about these and I'm sure the advice from Kaiden and Conrad is much more helpful, but I thought I'd throw in what I'd seen recently.

I had a friend go to NZ a couple years ago. The couple of things I remember her saying were some of her favorites: -high speed jet boat ride through a canyon in the Queenstown area. don't remember the name of the canyon or company though, unfortunately. -ice climbing on the Franz Josef glacier

yep, JD described it pretty well. One person on their bike riding and the other riders (and a driver, or the driver could be a rider i suppose) in the support vehicle, with the other bikes on a bike rack on the vehicle. When not on a bike you're in the support vehicle eating and drinking water and hanging out with the rest of the team.

Oops I was wrong, they did the 4x200, not the 4x400. In previous years they did longer distances at each time, but it still wasn't anything excessive like 50 or 100 miles at once. The 5-mile tactic was so they could keep fresh legs on the course all the time because they were trying to win the race.

Travis has done the Fireweed a few times on a 4-man 400 team and loved it. The last time he rode it they were switching riders every 5 miles, so it wasn't super difficult for them and so they could keep fresh legs on the course. With a relay team you can switch as often/infrequently as you want.

I got my first ever road bike earlier this summer, too, and had a lot of the same issues/discomforts. Now I like it more than my mountain bike! I still enjoy going biking on the trails and such, but it is SO nice to be able to go so fast without much effort. I ended up getting used to most of the things you listed above, but the only one that still bugs me a bit is not having the numbers on the gear changers. The other day I rode my mountain bike around and actually felt awkward and uncomfortable on it compared to my road bike.

Old Man Travis is turning 30 in about a month and I need to throw a party for him. Any suggestions on what to do for a 30th bday party? The first thing that came to mind was an 80's themed party because he was born in 1981, but that just seems too easy. I could still go with that, but was wondering if people had better ideas. There's always the black/over-the-hill theme, too, but I feel like that's better suited for a 40th bday. I'm thinking a keg and beerpong are needed, too.

Sorry boys, you've been out bid. 9 days after posting the houses online we had someone come look at my house. 14 days after posting the houses online we had an asking-price offer on my house! We sent them a counter offer within the 48 hour response deadline (4% realtor's fee for the buyer's realtor, I don't think so!), but now we've had to give them TWO 48 hour extension on replying to our counter. Things are looking promising as we've agreed to most terms verbally, but I'm getting annoyed having to wait this long. Assuming this deal ends up going through I'd say going FSBO was totally worth it! We're lucky that there was interest in my house so quickly.

I didn't have too much trouble luckily. My mom and I went out one day and started at Davids where I tried on about 10 dresses (only 3 were actual possibilities, the others were just me trying on types/silhouettes that I didn't think I wanted, but wanted to make sure I didn't like them). Personally, I didn't think the quality of those dresses was very nice, and for every dress I tried on there was at least one aspect that I really didn't like. After that we went to Anderson's and I tried on 4 dresses. There were two that I liked quite a bit. We marked those two down and then a couple weeks later I tried them both on again and made my choice. I went into the whole thing without too many expectations and not much of a picture in my head of what I wanted, so I was fairly easy to please. As far as cost goes, the really low-priced dresses didn't impress me at all as far as quality goes - both in looks and feel of the material. The dress I found wasn't too expensive, but was a bit above what I wanted to spend. I was going to give in and pay for it, but luckily my Mom said she'd pay for it. Anchorage really doesn't have very many bridal stores, so I didn't have many options (and I wasn't willing to fly out of AK just to look for a dress). Because of that I don't really have much advice as far as shopping around or trying to find a great deal. Maybe you could try ebay (not the most sentimental way to find your dream dress but could save lots of money). If you already know one or two dresses you want you could search for them on ebay and probably find a decent price... Or find out when the new season of wedding dresses comes out, and maybe stores will have a sale to clear out some of the previous season's inventory.

Have any of you bought or sold a house on your own, without a realtor? Travis and I are going to sell one of our houses this summer, then later in the year we'll work on finding a new house and selling our other house. Travis hates the idea of giving so much money to a realtor when we could do all the work on our own and not have to pay ~6% to someone. I get stressed out thinking about the whole prospect, whether or not a realtor is involved. When I bought my house I used a realtor and found it helpful because I had no idea what I was doing or what steps I needed to take. Thoughts? suggestions?

Here are a few things that I gathered from various sources while looking for a house: Get pre-qualified for a loan. Check out different banks/brokers to see how large of a mortgage you qualify for (in my case I qualified for a lot more than I was willing to take on, but at least I knew the lender would be willing to provide a mortgage on the houses I was looking at). This should also give you an idea of what you'd expect to get for an interest rate. Upfront costs to expect: -Earnest Money (to "hold" the house during negotiations) ~1% of purchase price. Home inpsection ~$300. Closing costs ~3% of purchase price, but sometimes sellers cover some/all of this. Down payment - amount is up to you, but like Josh said the 20% avoids paying extra interest/insurance. I looked at a lot of houses on my own before even talking to a realtor so I had an idea of what was in my price range and what I liked. On weekends I'd check the paper for open houses and during the week I'd pick up fliers to compare prices and $/sq ft for different neighborhoods. Create a list of features you must have, want to have, and would like to have. Also create a list of things that could be deal breakers for you. That way when you talk to your realtor you can give them an idea of what's important to you (# bedrooms, certain neighborhoods, or even something like a real fireplace) so they can help narrow down lists. Then when you go look at houses you have your priorities listed out and can see how the house stacks up. Here's a website that a realtor recommended for first time buyers to become acquainted with the process. in Anchorage there are workshops put on by AHFC for home buysers and they have their course material online. Could be useful.

norwaygirl: This is so creepy... WAHS Choir Teacher

This is so creepy... WAHS Choir Teacher accused of sexually abusing three students I went to elementary school with this guys wife and was good friends with her back then. Granted I haven't talked to her in many years other than occasional quick comments/notes on facebook, but still... How does this sort of thing happen? His wife seemed (to an outsider) so happy and in love with him. He did really sweet things for her all the time. They had their first baby just before Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, he's fooling around with high schoolers! While they were married, before she was pregnant, and while she was pregnant. It makes no sense to me at all a) why someone would cheat on a spouse, especially so early on in a marriage and while moving the relationship forward (buying a house, having a baby). I know people cheat all the time, but it is still hard for me to comprehend. b) why someone would have a sexual relationship with a minor knowing full well that it could lead to serious jail time and will have huge repercussions on all aspects of life. I don't understand how a 15 year old or 17 year old could be attractive to a 29 year old. yuck. c) why a teacher would have a sexual relationship with his student. It will only ruin his career fore the rest of his life... This whole situation has me really disturbed, especially since I know his poor wife.

Did you see that there was a guy in Eagle River who blew off one of his hands with a firework? Apparently he put the mortar into the canister/launcher upside down, and for some reason was still holding it - at least that's what I gathered from the ADN article. I'm glad we were all smart enough to not be too near those big ones when they went off. And apparently there are TONS of emails and letters being sent to the assembly and mayor. Hopefully they don't repeal this year. Good thing we had our fun while it lasted.

That picture of Erik, the one you chose as the album cover, is CREEPY. Fun times last night. It is always fun to see what costumes people create. There is a lot of talent and imagination out there!

My brother and I spent hours on end using Kid Pix. We had a great time with the coloring pages, drawing random stuff, and using the stamps. And of course we played some of the games you mentioned in your post.

There is a comment that was posted early this morning, apparently from Dave's brother: "Thanks for all those who helped with this accident. The cyclist is my brother, who has been and will be in surgery for many more hours. Among the many injuries he suffered, the most serious was a broken neck. He has no brain injury thanks to wearing a helmet. Doctors are fusing vertebrae in his neck, and he can still feel his fingers and toes. They expect a nearly full recovery thanks to the fast and successful response of everyone who helped. Thank you. Without your help he would likely not be in such a fortunate spot. And please wear a helmet, they really do save lives."

I almost didn't go vote in the primary because I was home sick that day. I'm SO glad I did, though, because otherwise I'd be kicking myself for not contributing my two cents. I'm really hoping Murkowski's supporters woke up after the primary and will come out in full force to support her in the election. It sounds like she's still weighing her options on the best way to get on the ballot, or to have a write-in campaign.
