Finished Wastelands.

Although short stories aren't my favorite, i really liked this collection. There were 3-4 real stand outs in my opinion. The last one is pretty awesome. Curious to see if others liked the same authors i did. Actually, King, Card, and Wolfe (all noted authors) wrote what i thought were some of the more lackluster or disappointing stories. Martin's contribution was pretty solid.

If i had to guess, i would have thought King was the author of David Bailey's chapter. Definitely going to look into some of Bailey's other works.

Hurry up and finish guys!

Psht, he ain't got nothin' on your bike. Mainly because the use of your bike is a preventative measure for future heart disease. Think about it.

avatar

Hmm, maybe. Though my bike would be more effective if I was eating less Costco fruit-and-nut medley. 150 calories per quarter cup.

avatar

Power food man, power food. Mix in some of those pre-cooked slices of bacon from costco and it will be mega-power food.

avatar

If I was planning on biking 20 miles, I'd consider it. However, playing Earthworm Jim isn't exactly the high-energy activity that would necessitate such power food. :)

avatar

The real key is not thinking bacon is now justified in every snack and meal when you start biking 20 miles a day. I can't wait for the daylight situation gets better here so that I start riding again cause I need that shit bad to lose my fatty winter coat.

An interesting poll I found on Slashdot: How many microprocessors are in your home, total?

For simplicity's sake, I'd say don't count cores of a CPU, as theoretically they're part of the same circuit. Instead, if an electrical device has a microprocessor, count it as one, if you have two of the same device, count it as two.

For just my "computing" devices, I have my Macbook (1), Mac Mini (1), Thinkpad (1), my sister's laptop (1), my Xeon server (1), the old idkfa server (1), the old gaming rig (1), the PS3 (1), the Xbox (1), wireless routers (2), WiMax modem (1), Arduino controllers (2), and audio/video receivers (2).

One of the comments had this list, probably a good start:

  • Cell phone(s): 2
  • Wireless phone: 0
  • Answering machine: 0
  • Microwave oven: 1
  • DVD player: 0
  • CD player: 0
  • MP3 player: 2
  • Digital clock radio: 1
  • Electronically controlled stove: 0
  • Dishwasher: 1
  • Digital Thermometer: 1
  • Bread machine: 0
  • Wrist watch: 1
  • GPS: 0
  • TV(s) / LCD(s) / CRT(s): 2
  • Cable box or satellite dish: 0
  • Calculator(s): 1
  • Digital camera(s): 2
  • Camcorders: 1
  • Programmable thermostat: 0
  • Water heater / boiler: 1

So, at least 32 for me. Then I thought about some other peripherals...

  • Game controllers: 6
  • Mice: 3
  • Keyboards: 3

Up to 44.

avatar

Wait, wait...

  • NAS device: 1
  • Nintendo DS: 1

Up to 46.

avatar

for controllers and keyboards and the like, are you counting wireless or wired devices?

avatar

Detachable wired controllers? Yes. Permanently attached? No.

avatar

Here's my house. Note I'm not considering any of Mark's stuff.

  • Cell phone(s): 1 in use, 2 old/not used
  • Wireless phone: 3
  • Answering machine: 1 in use, 1 not used
  • Microwave oven: 1
  • DVD player: 0
  • CD player: 1
  • MP3 player: 2

  • Digital camera(s): 2
  • Camcorders: 0
  • Programmable thermostat: 0
  • Water heater / boiler: 1
  • Game controllers: 20 (4 for wii, 4 for PS3, 4 for xbox, 4 for N64, 4 for PS2)
  • Mice: 5 (estimate....)
  • Keyboards: 4 (estimate)
  • laptops: 4 (3 aren't used/usable)
  • desktops: 3 (2 aren't used/usable)
  • xbox: 1

  • N64: 1
  • remote controls: 1 for ps3, 1 for tv, 1 for cable box
  • arduino: 1
  • furnace: 1
  • nintendo ds: 1
  • external hard drives: 5 (3 not used)
  • vehicle: 1 (at least??)

Man... the Sega Genesis had some really poorly designed games. Ended up tracking down some old ones I remembered having as a kid. Maybe it was just games in the mid-90's, but they're all super dark, difficult to control, and damn near impossible.

avatar

YOU DONT HAVE A SEGA CONTROLLER IDOIT

avatar

I have a controller. It's pretty close.

avatar

Yeah, a shitty controller. Unless your just a total nooble. Getting pwned by the mid-90s is pretty lame. I mean, getting pwned by the mid-80s would be fine, since games back then were evil, but by the mid-90s games were made for girls.

avatar

I'll grant that he's pretty good at the game. My point being: the game required memorizing all of the enemies, their timings, and the random pterodactyls diving at you. I seem to remember only once getting past the first level as a kid.

It's true. Today is my Birthday. I turned 0, 34 years ago today. I hope people will be going sledding this weekend! Also I don't really expect gifts, but gift certificates are always good if people do want to give some thing.. places I like are Amazon, Threadless, Steam/Valve, Title Wave.

Catherine is having her birthday on the 2nd as well, so hot sledding action is where it's going to be at! Also make sure everybody has a good sled and warm clothes. If you didn't see the email, this site (scribbit.blogspot.com)had a pretty good write-up of the sledding hill.

So the wife and I are attempting the next step in becoming real adults. Not just the fake ones we've been pretending to be the last few years. We're looking into buying a house. So the question I pose to those of you people who have taken this leap in the last few years is there any advice you have to share? Any first steps we should take or hints as to what kind of cash we actually need lying around to make this shit work?

In general we're pretty lost on what to do next or really if we should, and the internet is kind of a confusing place when it comes to decent info.

avatar

with a native first time home buyer's program, i was looking at 2.5% down on a mortgage of up to $250,000. Add the buyer's expected closing costs (all closing costs are negotiable), I was looking at coming up with $10,000-$15,000 in order to purchase. I had got pretty close to getting a condo for $190,000, and i was expected to come up with about $12,500.

avatar

Throwing out the race card, I see how it is...

avatar

over the weekend, didn't we learn that everyone's a little bit racist? and the internet is for porn?

avatar

well, the internet IS for porn, isn't it?

avatar

Shut your damn dirty mouth. Right now I'm having the wife look into what she needs to do to qualify for this, if she does at all. We just need to see if her grandmother was registered with the tribe or not. Because that shit would be awesome.

avatar

Mmaybe I can get something for being mexican american? Suggestions, Mike?

avatar

Things I have benefitted from as a result of being 1/8th Mexican:

  • I know how to fold a burrito.
  • Consistent facial hair.
  • Some fun, non-dictionary Spanish curse words.
avatar

Don't you have like a swirling, nebulous region of oddly oriented hair on your cheeks?

avatar

Yes. But it's consistent.

avatar

Absolutely, you do!

- Misguided affronts when identifying minimally with that culture

- Above par pronunciation of Mexican-American vernacular (see: Gallos)

- Scholarship opportunity that is still denied by income strata (ZIP code helped me more!)

- Disbelief due to skin and eye color

- Above par perception of socio-economic problems plaguing our nation

- New box to check! (1/8th not included)

avatar

I was just joking. You're a liar, not a mexican.

avatar

might as well play the cards you've got... everyone else does, so you might as well too. or so I've learned over the years.

avatar

A few things I took away:

  • Don't get yourself into a mortgage / utilities / taxes situation where you're dedicating more than 50% of your monthly income towards living expenses. This is probably more in general than just for buying houses, but given how weird / heavy costs come up for maintenance and improvements, it's a good idea to be able to save plenty, or at the very least, be pretty liquid. This was my upper limit in determining what kind of house I could buy (as the price of the house and the interest rate determined my mortgage payment). What percentage you set depends what you're comfortable with for supporting your family. I'm a single dude who has cheap hobbies. Your mileage may vary.
  • If you can manage 20% down on a house, you can get out from under having to pay mortgage insurance. I didn't make it for mine, but I paid damn near everything I had, and I think I got my "insured" period reduced from 2-3 years down to a year. More you put down, the more you save in the end, insurance, or otherwise.
  • It may help for convenience's sake to have a real estate agent, but for the 4-6 months I was looking, it was just my parents and I. Granted, my parents have bought a few houses and knew what to look for, but what you might assume are the "hard parts" of buying (financial stuff, underwriting, stacks of papers to sign) are taken care of almost entirely by your bank. Seriously. They will do everything. It's in their best interest to make sure they have a good investment as well as you.

The only reason I ended up having to get an agent was because the seller's agent I was dealing with refused to deal with me directly on the house I really wanted, nor act as a neutral third party. Because the buying agent's commission doesn't come out of the buyer's pocket, I just called up one of my parent's previous agents, she walked on the property for 15 minutes, said "This is fine," and facilitated a few meetings and paperwork signings. Easiest commission she's probably ever gotten.
  • Something is wrong with every house. Whether it's bad grading near the foundation, a bad roof, or a bizarre, 20' conex trailer in the utility easement, there's something wrong. The owners or their selling agents will try to hide it.

Before you start touring any particular property, ask for paperwork on the current state of the house. Usually, people have to declare deficiencies, such as lapses in repairs, previous water damage, building code violations, etc. I made it a habit to read this first, then let somebody try to sell me something. It's also good to ask if they've had a recent inspection, and to read over any deficiencies in that document.
  • Don't buy anything in a swamp (my parents work for the water utility.)
  • Craigslist was always a place to start. After that, there were a few Alaska-specific listing sites (MLS). Maybe check if Washington has something like that. Also interesting would be if Washington has a similar public MLS database that includes municipal property assessments, previous owners, and previous prices paid for houses.

If I think of more, I'll post it.

avatar

Here are a few things that I gathered from various sources while looking for a house:

  • Get pre-qualified for a loan. Check out different banks/brokers to see how large of a mortgage you qualify for (in my case I qualified for a lot more than I was willing to take on, but at least I knew the lender would be willing to provide a mortgage on the houses I was looking at). This should also give you an idea of what you'd expect to get for an interest rate.
  • Upfront costs to expect: -Earnest Money (to "hold" the house during negotiations) ~1% of purchase price. Home inpsection ~$300. Closing costs ~3% of purchase price, but sometimes sellers cover some/all of this. Down payment - amount is up to you, but like Josh said the 20% avoids paying extra interest/insurance.
  • I looked at a lot of houses on my own before even talking to a realtor so I had an idea of what was in my price range and what I liked. On weekends I'd check the paper for open houses and during the week I'd pick up fliers to compare prices and $/sq ft for different neighborhoods.
  • Create a list of features you must have, want to have, and would like to have. Also create a list of things that could be deal breakers for you. That way when you talk to your realtor you can give them an idea of what's important to you (# bedrooms, certain neighborhoods, or even something like a real fireplace) so they can help narrow down lists. Then when you go look at houses you have your priorities listed out and can see how the house stacks up.

Here's a website (www.homebuyingguide.org) that a realtor recommended for first time buyers to become acquainted with the process. in Anchorage there are workshops put on by AHFC for home buysers and they have their course material online (www.ahfc.state.ak.us). Could be useful.

avatar

Not that I know of anything in this arena at all considering how far out I am from taking this leap into "real adulthood." But, with that said... I have heard from friends here that some work places have extra benefits that get tacked on on top of health etc that a lot of people don't take advantage of because they forget they are there. I have heard that sometimes some places have benefits that can help with mortgages etc.

blew the clutch on my truck in ~33,000 miles.

avatar

How is it "blown?"

avatar

it had a very difficult time shifting. Nissan said the mechanic thought it was a miracle I was able to drive it into the shop.

when a clutch blows all the way, you can move the pedal anywhere you want, and the shifter anywhere you want, but it the engine won't engage the transmission. it'd be as if you were giving the engine gas with the shifter in the neutral position.

one way to gauge how much the clutch has worn is at what point in the motion of the clutch pedal the engine/transmission engages. new vehicles should engage the engine/transmission near the bottom of the pedal motion, and a blown clutch engages immediately the moment you press it, if at all.

avatar

I always like the CarTalk method of testing your clutch. Park against a tree and see if your car dies when you let out the clutch. A nice big stout tree.

avatar

wait, what? how would it now die if you let out the clutch without pressing on the gas?

avatar

If you have a blown clutch your car will continue to run. If your clutch is still good it'll pop and kill the engine like a good little manual should. Simple.

#2006, MrFood, +14Y | root latest up search | latest
avatar

also: this is usually a 50,000-60,000 mile thing, not 33,000.

avatar

What would cause the increased degradation of the clutch?

avatar

driving hard and/or amateur usage of a manual transmission.

Like my F1 style driving.

Like my dad trying to pull the boat out of the river when he didn't know how to use a manual transmission with an increased load.

I ARE SO SMOOOOOOOOF

avatar

As I often tell Josh: you win!

avatar

or like teaching someone how to drive manual. my stepdad apparently had to replace his clutch on his old old subbie after he spent a few hours trying to teach me how to drive it. (his method of teaching really was not resonating even the slightest.)

avatar

Not that I am basing this on in depth research or anything, but I think even 50-60K sounds pretty low for this sort of thing. My old Subbie went a loooong time without having the clutch replaced; way more than 50-60K. And my Honda is the same.

Friends! Romans! Countrymen! Engineers week is just around the corner; February 20 to 26. Among others, one of the national level sponsors this year is ConocoPhillips!

The purpose of the whole thing is to encourage K-12 students (with a focus on middle schoolers) to pursue STEM careers. What's STEM mean? Why, it means Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Thanks for asking!

It kicks off with the Bayou Bash on Friday, February 18, where $15 gets you bottomless beers and a homemade Cajun buffet! Door prize drawings will be held through the night.

Throughout the week, School Presentations will be happening in Anchorage schools, where engineers volunteer to give presentations. Don't know what to present about? There are canned presentations on the E-Week website! All the hard work is already done for you!

CANstruction will be happening concurrently at the University Center. Vote for your favorite sculpture with cans in the bins placed at every sculpture! All cans, including those in the structures, go to Food Bank of Alaska! Coffman has a team with a very advanced, hi-tech, secretive design! Go see it anytime between Feb 19 through March 5!

Friday, February 25th, high school seniors can sign up for a trip to H2Oasis to get a tour of all the engineering spaces, followed by a luncheon at UAA where they can sit with practicing engineers in the community to learn what it means to really be an engineer.

Saturday, February 26 is the big final day. K-12 students can participate in the Student Competitions at UAA, which include an Egg Drop, Paper Airplane contest (winners in longest distance and best time aloft), Tower of Power, and Floatable Moatable, among others!

The big finale is the Awards Banquet, where high school seniors are awarded scholarships, MATHcounts teams are celebrated, K-12 teams display their LEGO Robotics creations, and the 2010 Engineer of the Year is awarded. Also, this year, we bribed convinced Mr. WhiteKeys to come out of retirement and educate us on the wonders of engineering. Seating is limited, make your reservations early! $50/ticket, tables seat 10, plated dinner options. Participate in the scholarship raffle to win door prizes!

avatar

Oh no... not floatable moatables... I can't go through that again.

Fun show, despite the crowd. Not sure how a packed theater could be so wooden, but you folks played it well. Playing around with something else I was thinking about last night. My usual method of using idkfa was to have one tab be auto-updating, and the others I'm browsing/typing in just be "normal." That seemed more complicated that necessary.

Now, when you're navigating from page to page, whether you're in auto-update mode will stick with you, and persist until you click it off with either the key combo or the update icon.

My "Current Marketing Issues Seminar" class is going to be a serious drag. The man wouldn't stop using portmanteaus seriously. As J-Rho said on my FB post - BURN IT WITH FIRE.

However, my "Information and Communications Policy Seminar" class appears like it will be interesting. Half the class is employed in the telecommunications industry in some way, shape, or form. We had a pretty technical discussion today, and most people seemed to have the mental capability to contribute to the discussion. Yay for smart people!

Cue Homer Simpson: "I am so smart! S-M-R-T!"

avatar

"Information and Communications Policy." Is it a class on information? Or communications? Or policies? Sounds vague is all.

And anybody I would know?

avatar

The class seems to be a study and discussion of policy regarding information and communications technologies (apparently the abbreviation these people like to use is ICTs - don't know how widespread the use of that abbreviation is)

There's three people from GCI, I don't know what positions they hold within the company. There's another from MTA, and then there's one more, and I don't remember where she's employed. More than half the class is in the public policy master's programs at UAA and APU, and the rest are in the MBA programs at UAA and APU.

avatar

Oh, ok. Probably business types then, less the wizards.

One thing I wouldn't mind is having the "view more of the latest posts" button simply expand that bubble. As if it just loads 5 more posts/comments, rather that redirects you to another page. It could be sequential up until a point (20?). This is mainly because all I want to see is if the 6th+ latest comment is something I haven't read, rather than the entire list.

The nomenclature could also probably be simplified; "+5 Comments" or some such.

That being said, I do like the option of redirecting to the entire list of latest comments.

/Requisite praise and accolades for making a sweet forum and accepting critique and suggestions from the asinine user base bent on destroying your baby.

avatar

You have phrased your requests in the form of accolades. I shall entertain them.

#1839, kaiden, +14Y | root latest up search (edited)
avatar

Well. I don't think this was what you wanted.

The code that generates the "Latest Post" is already pretty complicated, what with the auto-update mode, the collapsing stuff on the mobile page, etc. I found myself trying to resolve what would happen if you hit "+5" while you were in auto-update mode, and I decided that was more than I wanted to deal with. In addition, I feel like the "arbitrarily add more length to page elements" design that Facebook/Twitter have (even more annoying when it automatically does so when you scroll past a certain point) is a poor one at best. Yes, it saves re-rendering the entire page, but if somebody's really curious about that 6th post, and they're going to click once anyways, why not give them more if not all of the information they might be interested in.

There's also my design philosophy so far that dictates: "If you don't bother to log in, you don't get to have nice things." Guests don't get any dynamic Javascript things, nor do they have the convenience of idkfa keeping track of things they've already read.

Anyhow.

So that led me to two things:

  • Now, when you're logged in, the latest post box will show you only unread posts. It will be empty once you've read everything.
  • As a more "advanced" latest-posts-type-thing, I've included "The Stream." It's effectively like browsing the discussion items, but it isn't limited to one item.

avatar

I guess I don't like seeing an empty box, either. I appreciate the 'shoutbox' style display of the latest posts right in your face on the home page. It's a preview of what's to come in the conversation at hand, and streams the latest information. Even if I've already read it.

From what I gather you're saying there are some technological hurdles when it comes to stretching that box and adding more than five comments on demand. I dig that. But to dismiss a design choice because "if you want more than 5, you're going to want as much as possible" is kind of flawed. I'm not suggesting i'm a lazy fuck that doesn't want to scroll through a bunch of information, but rather have it spoon fed to me. I'm suggesting that it's a slicker design model, and works better for the average human when you're not inundating them with information. That is to say, the snippets and hints at current conversation right now (or rather, as they were) is awesome. I thought that was something very different from traditional forums - something you argued for. The "what is happening right now," kind of thing. What I was suggesting is that maybe five is too few. But five also looks good, so rather than just asking to bump up the limit, I was curious if a user could just tack on a few more lines.

It's kind of a coin flip. Yes, I can click on the link directing me to a new list of every latest post from the past X days (or however many it ends up displaying). That makes sense. Or, I can watch web 2.0 magically extend that already convenient feature a little more, and ensure that yes, I did already see that latest post about the cats.

I don't think the idea of rendering more information is a poor design choice. When it comes to communicating information (graphically, anyway), you don't want to overwhelm your audience. I feel overwhelmed with the giant list.

avatar

:/

I'll try something else then.

Also, keep in mind that it's just a stupid suggestion from someone who doesn't know how to initiate the /run command in Windows.

Oh hay, can we also have custom image backgrounds? Turn the resolution way down, though, so it stretches and tiles into an epileptic wonderland.

avatar

No, no. You don't get to drop design advice and then feign technical incompetence. That's "just saying" in another form.

When you say technical hurdles, I liken the process of getting this to work to be much like this (www.youtube.com) (Not Safe For Work. At all.). Actually, that's what I think of just about all Web 2.0. Maintaining the state of numerous widgets on the page gets very complicated. It may save time for users, but also makes things brittle, and hard to troubleshoot if things go wrong. I've had to build entire applications where each little piece on the screen had the potential to dial back to the server to request information, update contents, page through data, whatever... It was an absolute nightmare, and that was even using a fancy Javascript library that was supposed to take care of everything for me. That this is becoming the norm is somewhat irritating. Even for those that have solved the technical stuff (Facebook, Twitter), I still don't feel the potential for scrolling infinitely, even if you don't choose to, is good...

Hmm. I just had an idea.

avatar

Awesome.

In all seriousness, I have no clue how difficult or easy any kind of coding and web-building is. All I can offer is graphic design and a snide, bitchy user's perspective. Dance! DANCE FOR ME!

avatar

Well. It's again probably not what you wanted, but something like it. The "Load more" button loads the last 10 posts using the same method I do for the updaters. Auto-update will still use your user settings and replace the Latest Posts box with whatever it comes up with for that, regardless of whether you hit "Load more".

avatar

Also only works when logged in.

Lurkers don't get the nice things.

avatar

Zuckerberg said the same thing.

YOU JUST WANT MY DATA

avatar

Mostly I want to distinguish the user experience before logging in from after logging in, in hopes that people will want to log in because it's a better system, or at the very least, better than idkfa v2.

Mostly.

avatar

Forgive me for trying to bust your chops. For what it's worth, I login when I have something to post. Otherwise, if I can distill the information (recent posting) I came to get without going through that one checkpoint, I lazy it up and don't login. Perhaps you need more disincentive for that behavior... but that might also discourage other users who share my train of thought.

/Shrug. The lollerdome requires a login to see any content. I'm fine with that because I've been a regular since 2006, but I can see how that might discourage new people from trying it out. They can't take it for a spin, or lurk anonymously until they're comfortable enough to post.

So perhaps you're honing in on something important - not shielding content from lurkers, but giving them a tangible reason to login. Perhaps more of the fun nuggets such as Stats, hotkeys, etc, could be limited to logged in accounts. Hrm...

Since you popped together all the code for the shiny box that GreenMan quickly dismissed, would you be so kind as to offer that as an option users can toggle in the settings page? cause I dig the "last unread" post box. I thought that was cool.

GEEZ GREENMAN RUIN THE PARTY FOR THE REST OF US.

(i jokes!)

avatar

I added a Settings field that lets you hard-set the length for whenever you log in.

I've still got one more idea I want to look into.

This is really cutting into the time I'm supposed to be spending writing a treatise on how much I disliked Twilight.

avatar

Hmm, before groaning about technicality and abuse of the HTML 4.0 specifications, I should probably consider usage statistics for idkfa. One in particular: that 65% of visitors spend less than 30 seconds on idkfa.

Hey Guys! For those of you that don't know, Avenue Q is coming to town!!!

Its a Tony award winning musical that is pretty much targeted and written towards our age group. I'd equate it to The Muppets meet South Park with Gary Coleman thrown in for good measure. Anyway, its a quality show and very funny. Sure to be a good time! If you're broke like me and can't afford tickets i might be able to help :) there are a couple 10% or more off discount codes, and an event at Rum Runners this Thursday night which has several dozen pairs of tickets to give away.

Since no one knows what Avenue Q is, we need help spreading the word! Check clips out on Anchorage Concert Association's FB page, or youtube. Hope to see you there!

avatar

I'm going on Sunday! I can't wait! I hear that it's basically Sesame Street for adults. I actually have an extra ticket, too.

avatar

serious offer - whoever wants to go to the 730pm sunday show, let me know! caveat is that you get to sit next to me! free ticket!

avatar

I wouldn't be against it, though, if there was a special lady you wanted to take, I suggest you investigate that option.

avatar

tried the lady route. no leads on that front.

avatar

Travis and I are about to head downtown for the 2pm showing. I'm excited!

avatar

Fun show. Strong talent, good set design (leaps and bounds better than Jesus Christ Superstar), and great puppetry.

avatar

It definitely reminded me of the east coast, especially the frequent "F*** YOU!" utilized by the various characters.

"Just grab your d*** and double-click for porn!"

avatar

Glad you guys liked it! And, please spread the word! It's a hard show to explain to someone in 10 words or less. And since it's for adults only, ticket sales are slower than Mamma Mia! or Blue Man Group. Which we knew would happen... So, tell your friends (or parents??) The internet is for porn, and buying tickets!

Awesome show, glad I saw it at this point in my life, rather than at a later point. Good sentiments, fucking hilarious!

avatar

I added a link on the myidkfa navigation bar that is a shortcut to mark everything on idkfa as "read."

I understand that while some people may want to stay current, or have a convenient and novel mechanism to read things, but for others it's just an annoyance. For the latter, this button is for you.

As a happy medium, if you click on "more", there's an option to mark as read everything that's older than 1 week.

Josh, didn't you think about doing this at one point? Or was that someone else? I definitely remember someone on idkfa talking about paying for their tuition in dollar bills or coins or something as a form of protest. I saw this and thought of that... http://www.nytimes....ion.html?src=twrhp (www.nytimes.com)

avatar

I seem to recall that as well. Maybe on idkfa v2, somewheres.

That was Jimbo I believe...

oh... right... now that you say that, I seem to remember it being him too. in which case... sad face...

Two suggestions:

1) Add an indicator for the number of times a post has been viewed.

2) Extend the black box around each avatar for posts for the entire length of the post. Would make formatting look cleaner, methinks. Well, maybe I'd have to see it. And maybe it would suck. But perhaps it's something to look into.

avatar

1) I've been thinking about doing this. I try to only perform 1 or 2 "have you seen this post?" queries per page load, otherwise I start to take a pretty severe performance hit. I might be able to swing something, though.

2) I worry about wasted space. Ye olde idkfa did this, and it worked out OK, but I felt that the extra inch or whitespace (blackspace?) just made for more lines on the screen.

avatar

Hmm. I added the view-count. It adds about 50ms onto the item page, but is pretty negligible elsewhere. I'll keep it for now.

avatar

Should probably qualify that the measurement is the number of users that have been logged in and viewed the post, not the number of times the post has been viewed at all.

avatar

MMMmmmm sweet. Now I have a basis on which to JUDGE.

avatar

Highest I've seen is 12. Which I think is the number of active users on idkfa.

Libby picked out a cat; I guess it's black with some lighter stripes (I haven't seen it). Anyhow, after brainstorming names, it's going to be one of these two:

Mirri (www.blackborder.com)

Pris (www.toplessrobot.com)

I know which one Josh would choose.

avatar

What's the sex of the cat?

avatar

Female kittttty.

avatar

PICTURE??!

avatar

where'd you guys get it? how old is it? do you guys want a recommendation on a vet?

avatar

Libby got it from the pound, it's around 2 months old.

You mean, for getting it declawed and such?

avatar

i would advise against declawing since it involves amputating appendages. Typical declawing procedures amputate all of the toes on the front paws from the tip of the claw to the second knuckle.

but i mean, for getting the checkups and initial things you need to do for cats, especially with a 2 month old. I use Hillside Pet Clinic just behind DQ there on Abbott, since a family friend works there. They do a pretty good job.

avatar

I feel the same way about declawing, but Libby really doesn't want the cat fucking up the furniture. You have suggestions in that regard?

avatar

there's this tape that discourages scratching. my parents use it at their house and i've been meaning to ask them where they got it. i could use it for a couple of carpet spots at my house.

also, if cats have adequate scratching posts that they're taught to use from a young age, they never scratch furniture.

avatar

I can't speak for the tape, but your last statement is true for our cat. A few incidents where she wanted to play, and started to scratch the carpet / side of the mattress were quelled with a sharp clap. Some early discipline along with a nice sized scratching post, and she doesn't touch the furniture or carpet.

Abby does tear through the house sometimes like a wild banshee. Her claws let her corner at even the highest speeds (really quite amazing). There hasn't been any significant damage, but you can hear her claws digging in to the carpet when she runs. But even if you had your cat declawed, they'll still have rear claws to run and jump with.

I would suggest trying discipline before defaulting to declawing. If ever she gets outside, without claws she wont be able to defend herself / climb to escape, etc. Like MrFood said, as well, if you ever have a rodent problem, with claws that cat will probably take care of it quick-fast. But I also wouldn't blame you (read: Libby) for having the process done, simply to avoid the potential for furniture damage. I can only speak for our cat, and I imagine there are some horror stories out there of kittens shredding valuable shit merely for their own delicious pleasure.

Tangent: Abby did look ever cute laying in a shredded pool of mulched paper towels. Probably the worst claw incident to date. Not bad imho.

avatar
To follow up on Mike's post, there is also a surgery that can be done that cuts the muscle in the toes that allow a cat to bring out it's claws. Our vet recommended this over declawing, the only downside is that you have to keep up on trimming their nails. After the surgery, they can no longer flex and therefore can't maintain their nails themselves and they can become ingrown if you don't take care of it. Cutting nails is not that big of a deal and it is a way to cut down on damage to your furniture if you decide not to declaw.
avatar

I'll have to see how you guys do this to Abby some time.

avatar

The best way I've found to cut my cats' claws is to wrap them up in blanket so that only the front paw I'm working on is sticking out, and keep them pinned to a bed by laying on top of them. That should frees both of my hands to work on their claws. It's incredible easier with two people, and doesn't usually require wrestling the cats into submission.

avatar

if you start young, i've heard the vinyl nail caps are pretty sweet. i think i'd try that with my next batch of cats. OR I COULD JUST BUY MORE... YES! CATS!

mine are declawed and don't seem to be scarred for life or anything. Also, if you have a leather couch or furniture their back claws still rip it up pretty bad. Up at my parents house (where they used to live) it's either have an indoor cat, or a dead one. Lucy still catches mice just fine. Tex is too dumb to hunt anything without cat nip in it. I heard that Sexretary's cat Chubs took down a bird once!

Are you going to get your kitty a leash??? Her and Tex could go on walks together!

avatar

I would agree in that declawing is pretty cruel to your kitty, but considering what I do every day at work I don't think I personally can make that argument.

If you do have it done, do it soon while the cat is young and will likely heal well... and not hate you forever for doing it. My parents old cat was declawed on the front paws and she lived a long full life of probably 25 years my our best guesses. Terrible mouser though...

avatar

SHE IS SO VIOLENT. I'm glad she was declawed. Although the last I saw her, she wanted love, but it hurt her too much to actually be petted. Man, that cat. Is it still alive?

avatar

No, she passed away last summer. But shit after that long she can do whatever the hell she wanted... like some kind of crazy old grandma.

avatar

As in died of natural causes? Man that cat was so old.

avatar

yeah, pretty sure that shit was old age... Mom said that one day she finally just couldn't make it up and down the stairs anymore and would yowl till she carried it wherever she needed to go. Like I said she was like 25 years old or so, so mom just had the vet put her down. Apparently it was the only time she never fought back on getting put in the car, I think she was ready to go.

avatar

awww... i want a cat.... i'm so envious. and a black cat too. :)

avatar

She's adorable. And violent. But she's warming up to Libby and I real quick.

avatar

Alright, I think we've actually settled on another name, just as nerdy (and for which Robbie will surely approve):

Dax

Now it's just getting her to realize her name...

avatar

Start them young, and talk to them ALL the time. I don't usually talk to my cats (aside from the "you f*$@ing cat!" or "you're ridiculous" here and there), so they don't know their names at all.

avatar

Funny, i talk to my cats ALL THE TIME.

avatar

Ahahaha the cat lady strikes again!

avatar

the voices in my head do a pretty good job of keeping me entertained without taking on personas of things or people around me.

avatar

I had another cat, Felix, and she (yes, she) knew her name really well. She was a pretty smart cat, though... we played all the time! It was fun.

avatar

I don't know if you ever met my parents' cat, two toes. She knew her name pretty well. but she also hates everything except for my baby sister.

avatar

Alright, and I lied AGAIN (blame Libby). The kitten's name is officially Mirri, so deems Libby. Note that I had no part in selecting the cat or the name, I simply provided some names for Libby to consider.

Mirri, Cat Warrior. Although this (magiccards.info) image more adequately describes that cat, I feel.

EDIT: attached wrong image initially.

I like your sad admission to your illusion of choice.

avatar

It's like when Kristen and I narrowed it down to three names, and I drew a slip of paper out of a hat. I'm pretty sure she had Abby written on all three.

avatar

Allusion? Anyhow, I just wanted it known that she chose it of her own free will, and I didn't thrust the name upon here. Of course, I think I probably prefer it over the other names, although Dax was also pretty awesome.

avatar

oh my god i LOVE it. that is such a great name!

avatar

Well unfortunately, the name was changed to Mirri, seeing as you replied to the Dax post. And then Libby changed it to Mirri. In any case, the nerdery is complete.

I just got a rat! His name is Heinrich Balls. Kind of after the Heinrich Boell who won the Nobel Prize and also because rats have disproportionately large testicles. He is adorable! All he needs is another rat to befriend/teabag.

avatar

Haaaahaha. Pictures are needed as well. Post haste.

avatar

I liked playing with the rats here at work, they were pretty awesome until you tried to stick a needle in them. Then then got hella pissed.

The only downside to rats, at least ours, is that their urine is really heavy with an ammonia smell. Possibly their diet.

avatar

No needles for little Heinrich and the only experiment thus far is sticking him in a blanket and seeing if he can find his way out. He's not too smelly, either. I've been feeding him cabbage, broccoli, carrots, and rat snacks, but I'm sure he probably needs more food. What do you feed the lab rats?

avatar

Hmm, some combination of dried out vegetable matter with probably some shitty soy based dried protein... All sterile stuff so our rats don't get any external bacteria of viruses. Granted when you have 80 of them in a room smells often compound.

avatar

So, poor Mirri is ill, which I guess it's pretty common for animals after leaving the pound... not sure why. Anyway, giving her medicine is like toture. Damned ignorant animal, it's for your own GOOD.

Pills or liquid? i am a cat lady; i can help. i know EXACTLY how to get anything down. Does she foam at mouth after ingesting? or just won't eat it? I CAN SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS.

avatar

Um, both. There's an antihistimine pill, and an antibacterial liquid. I've resorted to crushing up the pill and putting it in the liquid, because she won't eat the pill (even when embedded in a treat... she's not really eating solid anything at this point, even food!). It's incredibly difficult to get her to take the liquid, and she foams/gags/etc like crazy afterwards. If you know hints, pray tell.

avatar

Easily solved. buy baby food in the jar. I recommend turkey or chicken flavored. continue to crush up pill, and mix into maybe 1/3rd or so of the baby food. feed kitty with spoon. (its very adorable) make sure to feed kitty non-pill contaminated baby food first each time you give her a pill so she knows its awesome. also, make a big deal about opening the jar and make sure she sees or hears you do it. DON'T let her see you put pill dust it in. naturally. Its a little expensive, but totally worth it for a short period of time.

For the liquid, do you have a syringe? I say just use one of those and cover mouth with hand after the squirt. I guess you can also put in baby food, but syringe seems easier and much quicker. she can only eat so much baby food goodness. They usually gag and foam way less with liquids. I've heard rubbing or tickling the throat while keeping mouth closed with hands makes them swallow quicker, but I've never had to do that.

Good luck!

I've discovered the band Kamelot recently. Simply put, they kick ass. They're a power/symphonic/progressive metal band from Tampa. The rub is that they are huge in Europe and South America, have a former opera lead singer from Norway, a keyboardist from Germany and mix in the occasional hot soprano from a northern European country. I know Aaron and Erik have heard of them, but the rest of you should check them out. Their live album "One Cold Winters Night" is particularly good.

Surprised it took you so long, I've been listening to them for many years now.

I was always fond of The Black Halo. Their newest one hasn't impressed me so much, though.
