SPDCA: Fixing a toilet.

The metal lever connected to the flushing handle in the top of my toilet broke off. A few times, in fact, each time making the lever a bit shorter, but this time the lever broke enough that I could no longer connect the chain to the release in the bottom.

This left me with a metal lever, corroding where it sits below the water line. What I needed was something to extend it a little bit, and have some surface to hook the chain onto, as well as have that extender be a non-rusting material, and something that would clamp on to the remaining lever enough to survive a flush and refill.

My solution (rather than going down to Home Depot and buying what I can only guess is a $2 part), was to take a pen apart, use the pen's outer cylinder to wrap around the metal stump, and shove a large rubber band in with the metal stump to make sure the pen didn't slide off. Hooking the chain to the end of the pen (where it would normally clamp around your notebook, or pocket) worked well, as the tab on the end of the pen makes sure the chain can't slide off.

Now it flushes like a champ, at the added cost of a pen I stole from the barber, and a crappy rubber band that came with an Amazon package.

I win the prize.

no images here that are nsfw, but the story content is borderline nsfw.

HILARIOUS, by the way. especially sushi pants.

avatar

aww shame, one of the few blocked sites here at work.

avatar

I haven't been there in probably ~5 years, but if the content hasn't changed, I can guarantee it is NSFW.

They also (sadly) made a movie out of it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1220628/ (www.imdb.com)

You are damn near a decade behind on this one.

From what I can tell, the current ballot count is not looking hopeful for Murkowski. What is the news saying in Alaska? What's the latest? I'm getting nervous about this.

I guess if Miller wins, I don't think I will be as adamant about not giving up my AK residency and license... So that might be helpful to me.

avatar

right now she has more votes than miller, including ballots that the miller campaign is challenging as a result of bad spelling or poor handwriting. we are all hoping that the unchallenged ballot count is more than miller's. if the current situation holds (unchallenged + challenged ballots more than miller's), then that will lead to lawsuits and a drawn out conclusion.

avatar

I was looking at some of the pictures on adn.com of the ballots that Miller's camp is trying to challenge.

http://www.adn.com/2010/11/09/1545759/vote-count.html (www.adn.com)

This is just ridiculous...

avatar

Yeah, I really hope Sarah does something stupid to stand up for him. Then she will have effectively thrown herself off the bus.

avatar

I'm pretty sure her hit reality show has helped with that too. haha. At least she found her niche... Reality television does love her, I guess.

avatar
Most-watched TLC debut in the channel's history...
avatar

Even if those ballots which have been challenged don't stand, the percentages still favor Lisa. ~102,000*0.89=91,000 which is more than what Miller has. I also imagine those challenges will still go to Murkowski. I see very little momentum in the powers that be to side with Miller on much of anything.

avatar

Two questions.

How does anyone in Alaska even take anything Mrs. Palin says seriously. She bailed on the state guys! Seriously?

If you're going purely on looks, and keep in mind Lisa Murkowski looks like some kind of gremlin. Joe Miller oozes dousch bag. Every single picture of the guy does him no good. And on top of that he sounds like a total ass.

avatar

I guess I didn't really phrase the second part like a question.

avatar

apparently, 65% of voters had something to say about the candidate sarah palin chose. last i checked, that was a "mandate." just look at the margins don young has enjoyed for most of his congressional career.

avatar
And now the frivalous lawsuits and handcounting... what a fucking cock. I hope he moves out of AK after this.
avatar

I really hope Miller gets eaten by a bear. He is wasting so much time and money with this, and now he wants a hand recount. Seriously? seriously. http://www.adn.com/...re-than-10000.html (www.adn.com)

avatar

I can't help myself, even though I should know better to look at the comments under articles. But the people who are angry at Murkowski for trying to get outside the primary system like she's some kind of horrible liar and cheat dumbfounds me.

Fucking people man...

avatar
Louis CK would totally classify Joe Miller as a "faggot".

Everything tastes like Mucinex.

From last night's show, there is one thing that stands out as borderline unacceptable:

"...or else I'm going to kill you and mount your head on my fucking wall," or something to that effect.

I can't really get around that line, since it stands out as such a bad bright light from the show.

avatar

In all honesty, that was probably one of my favorite lines. Ever.

avatar

Oh Warren. How I love thee.

That scene was just silly in more ways than one. Mainly the fucking wall of rejection that Warren built himself into a corner with. I guess you can call that a character choice?

avatar

It looks like he got as much as he could out of that workshop.

avatar
I'm convinced that he thinks that would have been "good improv". I just don't think he gets that denying and keeping your character are two different things. Denying and rejection are not character choices (for the most part).
avatar

I thought the introduction of the "Audition" game was pretty successful. I'd certainly like to see more of that.

avatar
That audience volunteer was good. And also quite tall.

Back from my work trip.

Only picture I can recall having taken:

avatar

Awesome.

avatar

I love the shirt. It screams, "I listen to Deathcab for Cutie!"

avatar

Paid a whole $13, not just going to let it languish in my closet after using it once at the Rock Band party.

avatar

That shirt is totally cool. Plaids are in for the winter season.

And any signaling that you listen to Deathcab is only going to attract EXACTLY the people you want to be attracting.

avatar

Hipsters?

I keep looking at webcams for the local mountains and dreaming of not being at work. I know I need to stop but its just too damn tempting. Almost, very nearly played hookey yesterday to go play in about a foot of fresh snow yesterday.

I know the longer I wait the better the snow cover will be, but avalanche danger increases as well... Damn.

I remember that I was with a couple people who were supposedly family of mine, though since I have no sisters they were definitely not real family. We went through some sort of spot in a garage, and apparently we had died. We were underground, running from someone in this "afterlife." We had to face our fears, and then we had to do something else that I'm forgetting, and we could return to the living. Once we were out, we had to stop some sort of war, and then we had free access to both the living and non-living realm, until one day someone came out of the portal-esque thing that we used to travel, told us we had to kill the red queen, that it was necessary or we would be pulled back to the afterlife forever, along with some others. It was more difficult getting through the portal, we had to go in headfirst, like a dive, and kind of push through the ground, like it was viscous. We were deciding whether or not to find the queen when I woke up. There were a bunch of other things that happened before we first escaped the underworld place, but I cannot currently remember them. Weird dream.

avatar

Awesome.

I really think that evolution has so far dropped the ball in regards to sinuses.

avatar

Get a Neti Pot. Seriously. Hot water, salt, a pinch of baking soda and you're good to do. I use mine all the time. I'd totally offer to share, but most people think that's gross. Natural Pantry sells them on the cheap. Between a Neti Pot and a humidifier, winter isn't too hard on those little guys.

avatar

I was really debating going out to find one at 3 this morning. Alas, I opted for sitting in my bathroom and letting the shower run for a while. If this persists, I'm up for trying anything.

avatar
Even worse on planes. My head... my teeth feel like they're going to explode.
avatar

I use Afrin nasal spray before I fly. Everything drains, slightly icky, but my head no longer feels like it's going to explode.

avatar

The best part is afterward when you walk around like a drunken pirate trying to move the water around in your head. I wish I had a photo. Alas..

avatar

Yeah, yeah. If you couldn't hear out of your left ear, you'd try whatever you could.

My neck is really sore, though.

avatar

I have had problems with my ears ever since I was little. They randomly plug up on a regular basis - more often when I am NOT sick. When it is just one at a time it is usually tolerable. But when both are popping in and out together, I cannot even describe the pain and frustration... I have a hard time walking and talking and doing anything that required coordination, focus, or volume control.

Oddly enough, one of the only things I have found that helps me when my ears get like that is being really cold. If I get really warm it gets worse.

avatar

That's... worrying. I've got the other ear popping now, so maybe there's hope.

SPDCA: My neighbors consistently have weird shit in their yard, lawn, backyard, back deck. In the thankfully few times I've had to venture across the property line to hand over misdelivered mail, it's always been an adventure in tripping over bizarre things and awkward conversation.

Came home on Sunday to find the teenage kid and his friends had brought home a disembodied caribou leg and left it in their yard.

avatar

I need one of those. Show those damn neighbor kids.

avatar

YES

avatar

I was talking to my friend in Guatemala through IM the other day and she was asking me what I'd like for a gift from there. One of the choices was deer hooves as they're suppose to be good luck like rabbits feet. I think you should have nabbed the leg. If nothing else you could scare people during movie night with it. Or give it to a scary clown for Halloween. Maybe get it stuffed..

avatar

I'm not so much down with rotting cloven hoof in my garage. It already sort of smells like feet in there.

still holding my breath re: our senate race. we won't know for two more weeks.

avatar

At least it looks promising. And hopefully if the margins are high enough the Miller-time won't be a dousch and try to take every last hand written ballot in for a full review.

I seriously hate the recent precedent of huge legal fights over ballot counting. Its going to be pretty shitty here in WA this year as well I expect.

avatar

I read that as of this morning, Miller already had a legal team flying in to be present for the ballot counting and they are ready to take the issue to court to argue intent of voter or whatever.

What a classy classy man...

Best workplace training ever. Fire Extinguisher!

Not only was the guy doing the training slightly socially awkward but he basically did most of it in the form of anecdotes on where shit goes wrong and who in town uses what for what purposes.

The best part was we went out behind the building afterwords and got to play with some extinguishers. Granted they were water and CO2 ones. But still not bad in terms of fun at work. Apparently they don't light actual fires for us to practice putting out anymore ever since someone accidentally lit the side of a building on fire.

avatar

Awesome! All we get to do is read web-enabled slideshows about how to watch for the elusive but malicious uneven carpet, the bane of the office worker.

Walking Dead was awesome. I recommend it.
avatar

Acquiring.

avatar

I second this. Recommended viewing for horror fans, zombie fans, or zombie apocalypse survival aficionados.

avatar

Will do, just need a night when Katy is not home. Maybe, John is old enough now... just maybe.

avatar

It... might not be the best viewing choice for children. Included therein are: zombies repeatedly getting new holes in their brains, zombies missing legs and other important parts, zombie-moms, zombie-children getting what's coming to them...

avatar

Fair, I might actually have another couple of years before I introduce the boy to the zombie horror genre. One day though, we can rise up as a team against his mother and actually watch cool movies for once.

avatar

There is no bond greater than a father and a son watching movies that the mother hates. My mom can't stand science fiction (seen here), and as a result, we have annoyed her pretty much all of my post-toddling years with Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, etc.

avatar

Oh man, it was pretty great. Now they just need a Mad Men/Walking Dead spin off and my life will be complete. AMC is just awesome.

avatar

Mad Men / Walking Dead Crossover: Donald Draper, fighting to survive in a zombie-stricken Manhattan. The only way to survive infection? Drink, smoke, and lie to women. And guns. Lots of guns.

avatar

that seems like the basic rules behind surviving any Zombie infestation

That picture of Erik, the one you chose as the album cover, is CREEPY.

Fun times last night. It is always fun to see what costumes people create. There is a lot of talent and imagination out there!

avatar
My aim was to haunt your mind. And to become my fear. And rape Mike. Mainly, just rape Mike.
avatar

I was a little saddened you weren't screaming Clown Rape the entire time.

avatar

Also, thanks for taking all these pictures. Especially the Flintstone family portrait!

avatar

No problem.

avatar

Make my Halloween lame as shit why don't you.

avatar

Blame Libby. I was just the photographer.

avatar

ah, even your costume was probably way better than mine. Though that is truely due to my own laziness and lack of imagination

avatar

Don't feel too bad... Your Halloween couldn't possibly have been lamer than mine.

avatar
Thanks buddy, that is some sweet shiiiit!
avatar

Erik definitely wins the scariest/creepiest costume. I thought the funniest costume, by far, was the girl dressed up as a donkey punch.

avatar

WOW. I am insanely impressed with the decorations. You guys really went all out!

Josh, your costume is awesome. I absolutely love it.

I think picture #41 is one of my favorites. It is priceless.

This is my URL:

I couldn't believe how many people showed up for it. It was terrific! I don't think they were expecting that many people either, though... They really should have reserved the entire National Mall. It really sucked that half of it was closed off. Did you ever hear what the final estimates were for numbers of attendees? I heard a lot of different numbers, probably due to the fact that so many people were squeezed out onto all the side streets. haha.
