They couldn't use the replicators because they are very energy intensive and they had limited fuel. The energy issue is a constant problem in the first few seasons, and even when they have more fuel in later eps they still ration replicator use. Also, Neelix was native to the delta quadrant and had information about the species and things they encountered that would have been otherwise unavailable to Voyager. Like all ST series, the first 2-3 seasons sucked on Voyager, but it was very good near the end. Even Enterprise had some redeeming eps in season 4. I could disuss at length the issues relating to Enterprise's failure as a series, but I think no one cares as much as me so I will just continue to opine on TNG. Oh, and that "first few seasons suck" rule? NOT TRUE FOR TNG. I don't care what anyone says. Naked Now, anyone? The Binars, introducing Ferengi, Yar, lady-planet, Leah Brahms, K'mpec, the dauphin, happy-naked-planet... I mean, come on! I could go on all day.
