Any reason non-iTunes? Last I checked (and it's been a while, admittedly), iTunes gave you the ability to rip into MP3, which should be portable.

Not that I'm a big fan of iTunes (it's eaten my library and all playlists twice now), but it does label and organize the files pretty well.
